 Namuang Waterfall

Deep in the lush jungle just off the main ring road Route 4169 about halfway between Nathon and Lamai Beach lies the exquisite Namuang Waterfall. Namuang is a set of two cascading waterfalls, each falling and collecting into two different pools. Namuang 1 falls into a natural pool, providing a cool escape from the Thai heat. Namuang 2 falls 30 feet up the hill by foot and is a smaller, but equally refreshing pool. The water cascades down a cliff, turning them a striking shade of purple that earns the name ‘Purple Waterfalls’. This is a popular place for families to swim and relax and there is an elephant safari camp nearby where visitors can organise a trek through the jungle.

Ang Thong Marine Park

The Ang Thong Marine Park consists of 40 little islands of protected nature. All but one of these islands are uninhabited and undeveloped. The one inhabited island is like a time window into the past where the “sea-gypsies” still make a living by fishing. There are several ways to explore these islands – a speedboat is comfortable and will take you to the Park in less than an hour. Whilst on site visitors can enjoy snorkelling, diving, sunbathing and exploring the stunning park.

Hin Lad Waterfall

Do not make the mistake of thinking all waterfalls in Koh Samui are the same. Hin Lad boasts lush terrain known for its exotic flowers and excellent hiking paths through the jungle ideal for elephant trekking. Elephant Rock

There is more to Elephant Rock than the sheer size of it, which inspired its name because it’s as big as a Thai elephant. The terrain is rocky, which makes it an ideal destination for rock climbers and hikers who fancy a challenge. The view at the top is stunning, and well worth the effort to make the climb. Photographers can take some excellent panoramas from multiple angles. This is a beautiful sight, easy to access from nearby Chaweng and Lamai Beach.

Hin Ta Hin Yai

Local legend tells of an old couple, Hin (Grandfather) Kreng and Yai (Grandmother) Kreng, who felt it was time for their son to get married. They sailed to a neighbouring province to find a suitable bride, but their boatt was caught in a terrible storm and the old couple died at sea. It is said that their bodies turned into the suggestive rock formation as proof of their real intentions. Even the most mature of visitors may find themselves giggling like little children at the rocks that look suspiciously like male and female genitalia. To reach these rocks, tourists must pass through a narrow passage lined with small shops and souvenir stalls. The beach is ideal for water sports, and the water is clear enough to see an array of exotic marine life floating past.

Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts, Chaweng

Since 1999 Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts has been sharing the secrets of Thai cooking with visitors from all over the world. SITCA offers a variety of courses, from their morning or afternoon three hour classes to intensive one or two week immersive courses. It’s all hands on every step of the way, as visitors prepare and cook each dish themselves under the watchful eye of expert instructors, and afterwards everyone is rewarded by sampling the fruits of their labour. Instructional DVDs are available to buy from the SITCA shop if there is no time to attend a full class or a refresher course might be needed at a later date. The shop also sells powders and curry pastes to use as secret ingredients at home. This is a fun activity that amauteur cooks and professional chefs alike can enjoy.

Pai Cookery Samui, Chaweng

For those who prefer learning in a smaller group, Pai Cookery Samui offers classes to groups of up to four people. This class is popular with those who want to learn to make the perfect spring roll, as well as other popular Thai dishes. The class is separated into four different courses where guests will be instructed on how to make four different dishes. In each course, students will learn how to make a curry paste, a curry and a soup or stir fry dish from scratch. Smiley Cook, Chaweng

As well as catering for small classes of no more than four people, the Smiley Cooking Class programme has a slightly different approach to its cooking instruction. They offer two classes per day (9am and 4pm) and they both start with taking their students on a 30 minute tour of the market, where they can seen what the fresh ingredients look like and learn the beauty of thai herbs, vegetables and spices. After the tour, a two hour cooking class will take place where students will learn how to make four Thai dishes from a menu of their choosing, as well as unlocking the delicious secret of the mango sticky rice dessert. The menu includes dishes such as fried pork or chicken with ginger, Tom Yum (spicy prawn) soup and green mango salad amongst other things. Finish the lesson by sharing food with the other people at the table.

Spice Spoon, Chaweng

Spice Spoon offers more than just a cooking class, it offers a day of immersion into the Thai culture. Each culinary programme includes a tour of the local market, a visit to coconut and organic produce farms and places of untouched natural beauty before returning to the resort in the afternoon. Here, students will learn about Thai and southern Thai cuisine’s cultural significance and health benefits, indigenous ingredients and cooking equipment and convenient replacements to use at home. At about 1pm it will be time to put theory to practice with a step by step cooking class consisting of four recipes. Options include thai fish cakes, coconut chicken soup, thai fried noodles with prawns and so much more.

Paradise Park Farm

High in the mountains, overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, lies Paradise Park Farm. This is one of the highest points in Koh Samui and the beautiful waterfalls, rivers, canyons and rainforest covering make it one of the most picturesque spots on the island.

Paradise Park Farm is home to several local animals such as ponies, deers and pygmy goats (which can be petted and fed), friendly monkeys and even Molly and Marcha, the bilingual parrots who will speak to you in either English or Thai! Additionally, the park has two on site restaurants and bars, a children’s playground, jungle and river walks and plenty of rest areas.

There is a swimming pool which can be enjoyed at no extra cost, but guests should bring their own towels. At only 800 Bahts for a visit to the park alone, this is one of the cheapest parks to visit, and it certainly keeps everyone entertained.

Butterfly Garden

This beautifully maintained tropical park is home to hundreds of butterflies, bees and moths. While visiting an insect habitat might not be high on everyone’s list of things to do in Koh Samui, the Butterfly Garden is a popular attraction with adults and children alike, and in particular with aspiring photographers.

Not only is this a breathtakingly gorgeous nature walk with waterfalls, lush tropical plant life and colourful flowers, it is an intriguing insight into insect life. The butterflies are unafraid of human contact and will happily land on walkers’ shoulders and heads, sometimes long enough to take a quick selfie.

Watching these little creatures flitter from flower to flower and sip at the nectar is a delightful experience. If there is a keeper nearby, they will be happy to answer any questions about the species and habits of each butterfly you see.

An insect museum at this location is an extra treat for enthusiasts and it is also a great place to purchase fresh honey made on-site by the bees seen on your walk.

Bannchang Elephant Park

Most tours offer elephant trekking as part of a package and it is understandably popular with tourists. Bannchang Elephant Park is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing a good life for these majestic animals and rescuing elephants from bad conditions such as circuses.

The organisation is funded exclusively by visitors so the park ensures that your time is certainly worth your money. Instead of merely riding the elephants (although this is also an option) visitors are educated on elephant feeding, their daily habits, elephant’s body language and how the trainers create a relationship of respect with their charges.

Visitors will even have the opportunity to bathe, brush and feed their elephant and be taught basic riding skills. Certainly a more memorable and fulfilling experience than mere elephant trekking.

Koh Samui Tiger Zoo and Aquarium

There few other zoos in Koh Samui that offer such an up-close and personal experience as the Tiger Zoo and Aquarium. If visitors are not satisfied with seeing a large variety of sharks, manta rays and catfish, they can complete their marine encounters by feeding sea turtles.

If seeing Bengal tigers perform feats of agility is not thrilling enough, for a few extra Baht, visitors can have their picture taken with these impressive animals or even feed their cubs a bottle of milk.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

History
Thailand is the hub of Buddhist culture and Koh Samui is certainly not short on grand and beautiful temples. The most popular ones are Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) on the north-east corner of the island, Wat Plai Leam nearby and Wat Khunaram, home to the mummified monk.

Big Buddha is known for its golden, 12 metre tall, seated Buddha statue, which can often be seen by people flying in to the island. It was built in 1972 and is a representation of a moment in a Buddha’s journey of enlightenment when he subdued the temptations and dangers beset on him by the devil by meditating and staying calm. The Wat Plai Leam is also a great feat of architecture, as this temple houses a towering statue of a white 18-arm image of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion. This temple gives visitors a view of Chinese-Thai beliefs and showcases some Buddhist art and architecture.

Nightlife
Koh Samui boasts plenty of entertainment offerings, but the island is at its most lively after dark. Here you will find everything from exotic cabarets, thriving nightclubs and festive beach parties to beach bars, bbq’s, parades and much more.

The full moon party just a short boat ride away in Koh Phangan is an experience that should definitely not be missed. Wat Jee Kong Chinese Temple
This temple is a historic landmark reminiscent of a time when Chaweng Beach was the primary residence of Chinese immigrants in the 19^th and early 20^th centuries. In this area, visitors can also see old houses, monuments and the vibrant Laem Dim market which sells traditional items, crafts and fabrics. The temple itself is a beautiful golden monument, a true tribute to Chinese architecture.

Wat Khao Hua Juk

The Dry Season in Koh Samui

The best time to visit Koh Samui is during the dry season, which typically starts in December and continues through to February.

The Rainy Season in Koh Samui

September marks the start of Koh Samui’s rainy season but those who understand the island will know the endless benefits of travelling during this neglected time of year. • Chaweng Beach

• Bangrak Beach
  Also known as Big Buddha Beach, this bay is named after Ko Samui’s famed 12-metre Buddha statue towering overhead. The beach here is located on the northeast coast just a short drive from Chaweng, although the atmosphere here is far calmer. Bangrak boasts wide undulating sands lined with resorts, restaurants and shops. As with all of Koh Samui, it’s easy to find water sports vendors and tour operators offering energetic activities in abundance. From here visitors can take a boat  across to Koh Pha Ngan for the full moon party or visit the enormous Big Buddha statue which can be seen by air on arrival to the island.

• Bophut Beach
  Bophut Beach is the perfect peaceful spot during a Koh Samui holiday. Located far from the madding crowd  Bophut is also known as Fisherman’s Village – a traditional and well preserved part of Koh Samui. The centre of the beach is home to an array of charming wooden houses, perfectly in keeping with the natural surroundings. The beach itself stretches for more than two miles, boasting immaculate powder white sands and rows of tropical coconut palms. A small number of boats are still used for fishing here and Bophut is known for its laid-back family-friendly allure. The village itself is great to explore with an excellent selection of bars and eateries, plus a ‘walking street’ event every Friday featuring live music and performances plus food, clothes and jewellery stalls.

• Mae Nam Beach
  Perhaps the prettiest beach in Koh Samui, Mae Nam is a must-see spot during your Koh Samui vacation. This tranquil bay is one of the most picturesque places on the island with fine gold sand, an azure ocean and a perfect view of Koh Pha Ngan in the distance. Mae Nam is a remote beach, perfect for lazing the days away in the warm Samui sun. At the west end is the Wat Na Phra Lan temple, great for sightseeing. There’s also the Lomprayah Pier, with regular boats trips over to Koh Tao and Koh Pha Ngan. The stunning John’s Garden is a great spot to eat, particularly popular with couples and honeymooners. • Choeng Mon Beach

The main beach is one of the best beaches in Koh Samui, with plenty of water sports options and kayak trips over to Koh Fan Yai island.
