Bophut Koh Samui is a large and beautiful beach in Koh Samui, spanning over two exquisite locations – here’s a guide to visiting this exquisite area.

The first location is the main beach, which is easily a thirty minute walk in between the Big Buddha Beach to Maenam beaches.

The second is the quiet and charming Fisherman’s Village, perhaps one of the oldest places on the island, and can be found in the middle section of the Bophut beach. Bophut may be home to several large resorts but development here has not encroached into the serene beauty of the landscape. As you walk along the beach you will see a breathtakingly blue ocean, luscious tropical plants and stunning architecture in the Fisherman’s Village.

Best of Bophut:

Fisherman’s Village

The village has acquired a reputation for being an elegant and well-preserved part of the island. It is a beautiful fusion of old wooden Chinese shop-houses interspaced with new. The modern buildings have been carefully and considerately constructed to match the tone and architecture of the long-standing buildings, but also with a distinctive Mediterranean feel to honour the village’s history as the main French outpost on the island. Here you can find boutiques that sell high quality clothes and jewellery, dive shops that offer scuba lessons, elephant rides in the tropical forest, fishing trips on the local boats and much more.

Fisherman’s Village Walking Street

This part street party, part farmer’s market event is a colourful and lively way to pass time from Friday afternoon to late evening. Hundreds of stalls sell items such as handcrafted souvenirs, clothing and artwork but a majority of visitors go for the food and beverages.

Cocktails can be bought from between 60 -80 baht, food from several bars, restaurants and vendors can be tasted with very little cost and this can all be done while strolling along the beach. After spending an evening like this, it will be clear why walking streets have become increasingly popular in the last five years.

Samui Crocodile Farm

Located about six kilometres east of the Bophut Fisherman’s Village, the Crocodile farm is a rare opportunity to see these fascinating animals up close.

Thailand is one of the world’s top crocodile producers, so there are a lot of species to see here, including Siamese, caiman and saltwater crocodiles. There are also a variety of monkeys and snakes to be seen.

A highlight is a an act where a trainer uses a crocodile as a chair without any protection at all, and then risks his life by sticking his head in the croc’s open mouth. The braver visitors are also allowed to stroke the crocodiles, but only their tails

Luxury Villas in Bophut

The best Bophut villas are found on Koh Samui’s northeastern coast, a part of the island known for its peaceful resorts, quiet beaches and upscale holiday communities.

Here you’ll be just moments from Plai Laem beach with its pristine white sand and calm waters thanks to a coral reed a little way offshore.

Bophut villa rentals are ideal if you want to relax near shallow waters with only a few boats or jet skis passing by.

Things to Do in Bophut

Things to do in Bophut include snorkeling on the reef, or heading to one of the area’s excellent bars and restaurants.

There are also a number of prestigious spas to be found close by. Bophut villas are set in a tranquil corner of Koh Samui however some of the livelier spots such as Chaweng are just a short distance away.

Take a short drive to Santiburi Samui Golf Club, home to an 18-hole course in a truly breathtaking setting. Or for those in search of adventure why not take a boat trip to the Ang Thong National Marine Park – this archipelago features numerous deserted islands, all waiting to be discovered.

When travelling to any country, there are a number of customs that should be carefully observed. Here’s a short guide to etiquette in Thailand.

Wai
This is the traditional Thai greeting, much like shaking hands with a client or waving to a neighbour. It is a gesture of respect done by placing the palms of both hands together, as if you were praying, followed by a slight bow. The deeper the bow, the more respect is accorded. There are a lot of subtleties involved in a wai so chances are you won’t get it exactly right. In general, if someone wais you, acknowledge it with a smile and a nod, but your efforts will be appreciated if you do choose to return it. There is no need to wai a child or someone clearly younger than you. Stafff at our villas in Koh Samui will be happy to teach you.

Respect the Monarchy
The Thai people hold the monarchy and their religion in the very highest regard and any disparaging remarks about either will not be well-received. Also, do not show any disrespect to any images of the Buddha – it is perfectly acceptable to take pictures, but we advise guests not to climb or sit on them.

Shoes
Shoes should be removed when visiting homes, temples and family-owned businesses but keep them on in high footfall areas such as malls, restaurants or anywhere you are likely to find broken glass. Some shops put up signs saying yes/no shoes, but if you’re unsure just poke your head in and ask. Showing respect to this custom will be greatly appreciated by the locals.

Be Aware of Your Body
Westerners do a lot of these without realising, so pay close attention. Don’t put feet on furniture or gesture with them. Do not touch anyone’s head – Thais believe it is the most important part of the body and it deserves the most respect. Do not point, but if you must gesture do so with all four fingers extended and the thumb flat against the palm. Dress appropriately – keep your shoulders and knees covered in temple, do not expose yourself or sunbathe topless and breastfeeding should be done out of public view.

Tipping
Tipping is a relatively new concept in Thailand so taxi drivers and villa staff won’t be expecting it and they may even find it embarrassing. Restaurants may add a service charge, but in smaller ones discreet tipping for lunch or dinner (10 baht per head) may be appreciated.

Be Happy
Thailand is a place where people are happy and relaxed, therefore you should avoid negativity by trying not to raise your voice in either anger or jest. Villas in Koh Samui are simply stunning and the island is exquisite – we doubt you’ll be able to wipe the smile off your face!

Koh Samui is just 25 kilometres long and 21 kilometres wide with a ring road linking its beaches and other attractions.

You can rent a car and drive around in little over an hour – or travel by scooter, taxi, songthaew, bus or boat. Whatever you decide to do and no matter what your budget you’re sure to find an easy way of getting around in Koh Samui

Foot
The most cost-effective way of getting around is by foot. Many villas in Koh Samui have restaurants and beaches located just a short walk away. If you’re staying near to one of the larger beaches you will never be far from shops, bars, restaurants and local entertainment. Walking and hiking are both excellent ways of exploring and seeing all the island has to offer. Take care at night however as streetlights are few and far between.

Songthaew
Samui boasts an excellent public transport network of songthaews. These are the most popular form of transport in Koh Samui with dozens of them circling the island on fixed routes all day. They are basically pick-up trucks with bench seats with enough room for about 10 travellers. There are no fixed stops but you can flag one down almost anywhere and ring the bell or bang on the roof to get off. During the evenings many songthaews operate as private taxis, so it’s necessary to negotiate a fare before getting aboard. Expect fares to start at around 20 baht for a short trip – this is paid at the end of the journey. This is the cheapest way of getting around the island next to walking, an unexpected way of making friends and it can be the most interesting way of seeing the sights.

Taxis
There are many yellow, metered, air-conditioned taxis available for hire in Koh Samui however many drivers are not keen to turn on their metres so prices can be very high. Taxis can be found in all towns and circling the ring road but before you jump in it is recommended to negotiate rates in advance. If you’re feeling adventurous then try a scooter taxi. These are cheaper than a traditional taxi and easy when travelling alone.

Scooters and Car Hire
Scooters are the cheapest option and are the most common form on transport in Koh Samui and readily available across the island. Expect to pay around 200 Baht per day for a bike and around 800 Baht for a car. This form of transport may be popular however visitors should be aware that Koh Samui has many steep, sandy roads and some of the highest accident rates in the country. Honda Dreams are the most common bikes available to rent however Yamaha Nouvo’s are recommended as they are fully automatic and therefore much easier to ride. Foreigners riding bikes without safety helmets will be fined around 500 baht which must be paid immediately at a nearby police station. It is also important to know in advance that insurance does not exist for motorbikes therefore riders are liable for any danger and it’s almost always the foreigner’s fault. Car hire ‘bargains’ sometimes come without insurance and are therefore a risky proposition. Any established company such as Budget or Avis will include comprehensive insurance in the rental.

Bicycles and Boats
Samui is a hilly area with plenty of off road areas to explore. If you are physically fit then bikes are a perfect mode of travel in Koh Samui. Good quality mountain bikes are available for hire around most places. Boats are a great way to explore the island’s waters or to visit one of the many nearby islands such as the Angthong Marine park. Boat trips and tours are easily affordable and are available to book in most towns and beaches in Koh Samui.

The wildlife in Koh Samui is as diverse as the island itself – and you needn’t go all the way to a zoo to see it!

You’re sure to spot plenty of native creatures during your Koh Samui vacation, here’s a short guide to making the most of what you see on your travels…

Dogs

There are plenty of stray dogs in Koh Samui however they are relatively friendly and won’t bother you unless you particularly want to seek them out.

These dogs are very independent and do not require tourists to feed them, shelter them or pet them.

You may see a lot of them, so just consider them a part of the scenery.

Elephants, Crocodiles & Wild Monkeys

Take a jungle tour and experience the wonder of Koh Samui’s rich exotic wildlife.

These exhilarating tours are taken atop an elephant as you trek to spot other incredible creatures such as baby elephants, crocodiles and wild monkeys.

You can also enjoy the exquisite scenery and take some super photographs along the way.

Samui Aquarium and Tiger Show

The Samui Aquarium features almost every sea life creature and fish native to the Gulf of Thailand from nurse sharks to manta rays and schools of vibrant tropical fish.

Visitors can even get involved with feeding the sea turtles.

Koh Samui zoo is home to Bengal tigers, leopards and other wild creatures. Enjoy live daily shows.

Snakes
Koh Samui has around 200 species of snakes but the poisonous ones – such as king cobras – should be found deep in the jungle and not near human habitation.

When walking in the jungle it’s wise to stick to the beaten path and avoid searching through the bushes and trees.

If you happen to find a snake slithering in your villa garden it may be best not to try to pick it up.

Geckos

These quirky little creatures are truly harmless and are a common sight in Koh Samui.

You will find them on walls, ceilings and hanging around lamps in order to catch insects attracted to light.

The largest gecko you will see is the Tookay, which can be as long as your hand, excluding the tail.

In general, the gecko will be your best friend on your Koh Samui vacation as they eat mosquitos.

However, do not try to corner or grab them because they can bite if they feel threatened. It is best to leave them be and be grateful that they keep mosquitos at bay.

Scorpions, Mosquitos and Other Insects

Aside from snakes, the land creatures you should most watch out for are scorpions and centipedes.

These creature are impressive to spot but for safety, always remember to shake out your shoes before putting them on and keep them inside overnight to prevent them from becoming nesting grounds.

Also, do not assume that the geckos will be your only effective defence against mosquitos.

Before going on Koh Samui villa vacation it’s a good idea to know before you go what to pack and what not to! Here’s a handy guide to packing for Koh Samui to make your departure as easy as possible.

Know Before You Go

Thailand is a very modest country and although the locals are used to the casual dress of tourists, it may be a good idea keep your knees and shoulders covered. Using the ‘knees and shoulders’ rule as a guide, stick to packing long shorts and light cotton or linen shirts. Sundresses are acceptable day wear but leave your jeans behind as it will be far too hot to walk comfortably in these. The typical Thai may dress modestly but the rules are bent for tourists around the beaches and resorts, where shorts and t shirts are the norm.

What to Wear When Sightseeing in Koh Samui?

When sightseeing and walking around the island, everyone should opt for day wear rather than beach wear. Comfy sandals are great for wandering around, as they don’t require socks and are easy to slip on and off. Just make sure they have a good grip for safety. Remember to pack running shoes if you plan on taking part in any tours or keeping fit in the Koh Samui villas gymnasiums. During rainy season, a light sweater or cardigan will be enough to keep out the chill. Ponchos and umbrellas are also readily available around the island.

Packing for the Beach

At the beach, bikinis and swim trunks are fine but women should be aware that breast exposure is not the norm in Thailand. This also applies to breast-feeding in public. Once you’ve left the beach, be sure to remove your beachwear in a restroom cubicle or somewhere private and slip back into your day wear. Local vendors are often seen selling beach wear along Koh Samui’s beaches.

What to Wear in the Evening

Sometimes you will want to party so don’t be afraid of dressing to impress. Women can wear anything in the bars and clubs, including shorts, t shirts and evening dresses. Men should consider wearing long trousers and collared shirts to restaurants however visitors often wear shorts in nice venues.

Dressing for Koh Samui Temples?

Modest clothing that abides by the ‘knee and shoulder’ rule is a strict dress code in the temples in Koh Samui. Women may want to consider knee length or long skirts, long shorts or trousers and preferably closed-toed shoes. A pashmina or long scarf is your best friend here as it can either cover your shoulders or function as a longer skirt. The same rule applies to men. Keep it modest with covered torsos, sleeves and legs.

Pack light!

Villas in Koh Samui come equipped with laundry facilities and villa staff so pack light as you can wear the same thing twice.

Extra Essentials

Koh Samui boasts year round sun so be sure to bring hats and sun cream and after sun. Items such as tampons, deodorant and razors are not easy to find on Koh Samui so make sure you are well stocked for your trip.

With miles of stunning scenery, year-round sun and endless cultural sites you’d be forgiven for wondering where to start when you explore Koh Samui.

Here’s part one of our selection of the best things to do in Koh Samui…

Boat Trips in Koh Samui

There’s no better way to see Koh Samui than on water.

The island boasts an array of boat tour operators, ranging from basic boat trips, to luxury yachts. The magical island of Angthong Marine Park can be explored via speed boat, with the option of visiting other islands including Wao, Tai Phow and Mae Kho.

Once on Angthong guests can enjoy pristine beaches, secluded lagoons and stunning viewpoints just a short distance from Koh Samui. For those on a tight budget Koh Samui’s calm waters can be explored by kayak, available for rental for around 200 baht per hour. Other options include paddle-boarding, glass bottom boat tours, sunset cruises and catamaran trips, available from most recommended boat tour operators in Koh Samui.

Cooking Lessons in Koh Samui

When you visit Koh Samui you’re sure to fall in love with the food. Why not bring the taste of Thailand home by checking out the many well-priced cooking classes on the island? Many cooking schools run regular programs which teach an array of Thai cooking skills. Students can learn to make authentic Asian dishes such as tom yam, phad thai, stir fries, curries, spring rolls and spicy salads.

Classes are run by professional chefs and are open to everyone regardless of experience. Aside from the cookery, students will learn about the nutrition benefits of Thai food and how how to source the very best ingredients from the local markets. The best cooking school on the island is the Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts.

Best Beaches in Koh Samui

The picture-perfect island is fringed with some of the best beaches in the world, each offering its own charm and appeal.

Chaweng and Lamai are the liveliest and popular with tourists, offering endless activities and entertainment at all times of the day and night. Big Buddha, Bo Phut, Choeng Mon and Mae Nam in the north are far more peaceful, making them ideal for families or those in search of rest and relaxation.

On the island’s south and west coast there are plenty of deserted bays to explore – these can be accessed by bike and are a great idea for day trips in Koh Samui.

Temple Tours

Koh Samui may be a small island, but it’s home to more temples than any other island of its kind. Temples in Koh Samui boast a rich religious history, stunning architecture, great viewpoints and an array of interesting exhibits and artefacts.

Temple tours in Koh Samui are a peaceful way to spend the day, making a change from the holiday hubbub on some parts of the island. The Wat Phra Yai, Big Buddha temple is probably the most well-known, soaring 40 feet into the air behind Big Buddha Beach. Many visiting Thais make this their first port of call, lighting incense and laying gifts of food and beverages while praying for a safe and happy visit to the island.

Other popular temples in Koh Samui include the Hin Lad Waterfall Temple set in evergreen tropical jungle close to the Hin Lad Waterfall. Wat Khunaram, home to the body of Samui’s most famous mummified monk Loung Pordaeng and Wat Plai Laem located near the Big Buddha in the north of the island.

Villas in Koh Samui

Nestled in a sheltered spot in the clear blue Thai Gulf, Koh Samui is one of the most popular diving destinations in the world.

Perfectly located close to the exquisite Ang Thong Marine Park, Koh Samui boasts a wealth of stunning scuba diving spots offering warm water and clear views of the island’s amazing marine life.

Hawksbill Turtle Koh Samui

An array of underwater life abounds around the island’s towering sea pinnacles, rock formations and rich coral reefs. Divers can expect to spot an array of exotic fish and coral species including hawksbill turtles, trigger fish, whale sharks, multi-coloured coral and an abundance of reef fish.

Diving in Koh Samui is one of the many reasons to visit this tropical paradise, popular with divers of all ages and experience levels. Koh Samui and its sister island Koh Tao boast some of the best diving sites in Thailand, with short, accredited courses easily available and especially affordable. A wide range of dive operators offer instruction for all levels as well as courses conducted in multiple languages.

Most diving operators in Koh Samui are located close to the beach with snorkel and dive trips taking place in the calm, shallow waters around Chaweng, Coral Cove and Bophut Beaches to name just a few. Visibility can vary between 10 – 30 metres with mainly calm currents on most sides of the island except during the monsoon months.

Just a short boat ride away are world-class dive sites at Ang Thong Marine Park, Sail Rock and Sairee Beach in Koh Tao. Crystal clear waters, an abundance of marine life and miles of protected coral reef makes these areas some of the best diving and snorkeling sites in the world. Wall diving is definitely on the menu here with numerous exceptional walls, gulleys and channels to explore.

One of the best dive sites in Koh Samui is Koh Yippon, located in the far north of the Ang Thong Marine Park. This exquisite island is ranked as one of the best diving destinations in the world with its plethora of stunning soft and hard corals, underwater wildlife and caves and crevices to explore. The abundant eco system around the island is home to large snappers, stingrays, yellow tailed barracuda and blue ringed angel fish. Due to its relatively shallow waters Koh Yippon is ideal for beginners, and offers calm waters even during the monsoon season due to its sheltered location.

Dragon Island in Koh Samui’s north-west point is famous for its gold and purple coral sponges, whale sharks, huge hawksbill turtles and hoards of tropical fish. As the name suggest the island resembles the shape of a dragon and is truly magical both above and below the water line. In the shallow water and protected bay there is a wealth of water world to discover. Dives here range from shallow to deep with more than enough exotic life to spot in all depths.

Known for its legendary diving and clear calm waters, Koh Samui is the perfect destination for a diving vacation. There are a multitude of dive sites in and around Koh Samui where the open ocean is teeming with some of the most exciting species of flora and fauna. Dives can be arranged via various accredited operators including the Discovery Dive Centre, Aquamaster, Lamai Scuba Divers and Bophut Diving School and many more.

The best time to dive in Koh Samui is from late December to October. The monsoon season starts in November however due its sheltered location Koh Samui monsoons are normally mild and relatively short compared to other Asian islands. Diving equipment is available for rental or purchase in dive schools or scuba diving shops all over Koh Samui, and many luxury villas in Koh Samui offer easy access to the area’s beaches and dive sites.
