No matter where you go in the world, the expectation of romance on Valentine’s Day will follow. Koh Samui is the perfect setting for a wedding proposal, an anniversary, a belated honeymoon or just because you want some time away with your loved one.

Most of the best of Koh Samui can be enjoyed as a couple, but here are a few things that might be specifically tailored to couples and romance.

Couples’ Massage

Start the day in blissful luxury in one of the island’s many spa resorts, or add a panoramic view by getting a couples massage on the beach. One popular place is Zazen Boutique Resort (taken from the Japanese word for “to find inner peace”) where couples enjoy a three hour treatment which includes a healing hot stones massage for her and a four hands massage for him, followed by anti-aging facials for both. The Cyan Spa in the Fisherman’s Village, Bophut, is also a popular destination with a wide variety of treatments and a Jacuzzi overlooking Bophut Bay and Koh Phangan. Good Thai massages are available anywhere on the island and most resorts will offer a package massage for two people. That said, a side-by-side massage on the beach is just as good, and possibly cheaper than a resort. Some cheeky masseuses will even insist you hold hands during the treatment.

Sunset Cruise

Cruises are a good way of exploring Koh Samui and nearby islands by sea, but under the gentle glow of the setting sun they take on a more romantic allure. The Red Baron, a traditional sailing junk yacht, departs from The Fisherman’s Village every Monday and Friday at 4:30pm for the Romantic Sunset Dinner Cruise. It sails along all the beaches of Koh Samui and offers a dinner buffet on board while the sun gently dips below the horizon. The Samui Ocean Sports and Yacht Centre also has skippered sailing yachts that can be chartered for a sunset cruise. The Viva 2 and the Sanora in particular are perfect for a couple of people (maybe on their honeymoon). Both include drinks, snacks and pit stops for swimming and snorkelling.

Places to Eat

No romantic evening is complete without an delicious dinner to either start or compliment the whole experience. There are many good restaurants to suit budget, taste in food or desired atmosphere. These options, however, may make the evening extra special. Located near to Big Buddha, Le Jaroen French/Thai fusion restaurant is like stepping into the colonial era. The restaurant is set amongst a turn-of-the-century Oriental aromatic products trading company, several European, Chinese and Local colonial style buildings and is surrounded by frangipani trees, hanging Chinese lanterns and overlooks the palm-tree lined beach. Clearly, the location is perfect, but the food is the main attraction on a romantic evening. The mouth-watering Butter Poached Atlantic Lobster comes very highly recommended. It is servedwith Granny Smith green apple and fennel presse plus strawberry gazpacho. Diners have also raved about the Wagyu Beef Cheeks braised for 6 hours with a Port wine sherry vinegar glaze, celery root pistachio mousseline and young vegetables. Those are just two of the delicious dishes on the menu for the perfect Valentine’s dinner.

Once in a Blue Moon

As the name suggests, a dining experience like this does not come around very often. Brought to you by the team at Four Seasons Resort, Koh Samui, this is that rare, perfect moment to show someone how much you love them. It is a table for two set on a secluded beach accessible only by boat or secret staircase, under the shade of the palm trees whilst the gentle crashing of the waves serenades you. The only light you’ll see is from the moon, the stars, the candles and the tiki torches. The menu is designed by executive chef, Alex Garés, and there are options of Thai or Western cuisine, served by a personal butler. The evening ends with the couple releasing floating lanterns into the sky for good fortune.

Discover stunning scenery, palm fringed beaches, world-class spas and so much more on a Koh Samui vacation in 2016. Here’s a round-up of the best things to see and do during your trip…

Chaweng Beach photo courtesy of kohsamui.com

Beaches Galore

Koh Samui is home to some of the best beaches in the world, each offering something slightly different from the next. Chaweng and Lamai on the east side are the liveliest with an array of activities and entertainment to enjoy both day and night. The northern beaches of Big Buddha, Bo Phut, Choeng Mon and Mae Nam are more peaceful, boasting an abundance of tropical island charm. To the island’s south and west coast are numerous deserted bays to explore, so wherever you stay on a Koh Samui vacation in 2016, you’ll find a beach for every mood.

Erotic Rocks

Known locally as Hin Ta and Hin Yai the world-famous Grandmas and Grandpa rocks in Koh Samui draw crowds from far and wide. These fascinating erotic rock formations have been carved by the current to resemble male and female genitalia! Local lore has it that the rocks were formed when a couple were shipwrecked and washed ashore here. This area is one of the most photographed places in Koh Samui and is well worth a visit during your Samui villa holiday.

Bophut Fisherman’s Village

Located along the middle section of Bophut Beach this is one of the islands most popular tourist hotspots. Lined with elegant boutiques, bars, restaurants, dive stores and more, the area boasts a sophisticated and distinctly Mediterranean vibe. Bophut is situated between Big Buddha and Maenam beaches, within easy reach of villa rentals in Koh Samui.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

This exquisite archipelago of islands can be seen from many Samui villas and should top the list of things to do during your Koh Samui vacation. Here you will find towering limestone mountains, dense jungle, powder white beaches, waterfalls, mangroves, caves and more to explore. This protected area of land and sea is home to a rich variety of exotic plants, animals and fish and is ideal for swimming, snorkelling, diving, hiking and sunbathing. Ang Thong can be easily reached by boat from Koh Samui.

The Mummified Monk

The island’s mummified monk at the Wat Khunaram temple attracts visitors from across the globe in search of traditional Thai culture. Located away from the crowds the temple is famous for the mummified corpse of monk Loung Pordaeng kept on display there. Laid in a glass coffin surrounded by flowers and fruit offerings, locals believe the monk is a symbol of peace and sanctity.

Spas, Shopping, Snake Farms and More!

Need any more reasons to book a Koh Samui vacation in 2016? This diverse holiday hotspot attracts visitors from across the globe who come to experience its world-class cuisine, great shopping offerings, luxuriant spas and great golf at the Santiburi Samui Country Club. Other don’t-miss attractions include the famous Samui Snake Farm, the magical Purple Waterfalls, Samui’s renowned cabaret shows, Buddhist temples, elephant trekking, water sports and so much more.

Koh Samui is a breathtaking island of natural beauty which can sometimes be overlooked in favour of its buzzing shopping malls, restaurants and bars. For those in search of the natural attractions in Koh Samui, head away from the main tourist towns and you’ll find sights that will leave you breathless with awe

Namuang Waterfall

Deep in the lush jungle just off the main ring road Route 4169 about halfway between Nathon and Lamai Beach lies the exquisite Namuang Waterfall. Namuang is a set of two cascading waterfalls, each falling and collecting into two different pools. Namuang 1 falls into a natural pool, providing a cool escape from the Thai heat. Namuang 2 falls 30 feet up the hill by foot and is a smaller, but equally refreshing pool. The water cascades down a cliff, turning them a striking shade of purple that earns the name ‘Purple Waterfalls’. This is a popular place for families to swim and relax and there is an elephant safari camp nearby where visitors can organise a trek through the jungle.

Ang Thong Marine Park

The Ang Thong Marine Park consists of 40 little islands of protected nature. All but one of these islands are uninhabited and undeveloped. The one inhabited island is like a time window into the past where the “sea-gypsies” still make a living by fishing. There are several ways to explore these islands – a speedboat is comfortable and will take you to the Park in less than an hour. Whilst on site visitors can enjoy snorkelling, diving, sunbathing and exploring the stunning park.

Hin Lad Waterfall

Do not make the mistake of thinking all waterfalls in Koh Samui are the same. Hin Lad boasts lush terrain known for its exotic flowers and excellent hiking paths through the jungle ideal for elephant trekking. This is the perfect spot for a picnic and there is a trail which leads to the Hin Lad Waterfall Temple, which boasts beautiful Buddha sculptures and a lovely garden that can serve as a relaxing meditation space. The waterfall itself is gorgeous, and the most popular time for tourists to come is during the rainy season, as it grows with the recurring rainfall.

Elephant Rock

There is more to Elephant Rock than the sheer size of it, which inspired its name because it’s as big as a Thai elephant. The terrain is rocky, which makes it an ideal destination for rock climbers and hikers who fancy a challenge. The view at the top is stunning, and well worth the effort to make the climb. Photographers can take some excellent panoramas from multiple angles. This is a beautiful sight, easy to access from nearby Chaweng and Lamai Beach.

Hin Ta Hin Yai

Local legend tells of an old couple, Hin (Grandfather) Kreng and Yai (Grandmother) Kreng, who felt it was time for their son to get married. They sailed to a neighbouring province to find a suitable bride, but their boatt was caught in a terrible storm and the old couple died at sea. It is said that their bodies turned into the suggestive rock formation as proof of their real intentions. Even the most mature of visitors may find themselves giggling like little children at the rocks that look suspiciously like male and female genitalia. To reach these rocks, tourists must pass through a narrow passage lined with small shops and souvenir stalls. The beach is ideal for water sports, and the water is clear enough to see an array of exotic marine life floating past.

There’s no better way to celebrate in style than with Christmas in Koh Samui. Mid-way through December the rainy season subsides to give way to all day sunshine. Some of the celebrations here may not be so different to usual family traditions. Here are some of the best things to do to celebrate Christmas in Koh Samui.

Angela’s Bakery and Cafe

Angela’s Bakery in Maenam makes fresh mince pies, which are so popular that phoning ahead is necessary to avoid disappointment.

This is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious Christmas breakfast. The day can start with freshly baked scones and bagels, pancakes or even a full English breakfast.

Lunch can be a selection of sandwiches in order to tide everyone over while saving space for dinner. Angela’s is located at Samui Ring Road, 64/29 Moo 1, Tambon Mae Nam. For more information, why not check out Angela’s Facebook page here.

Poppies

Poppies restaurant is renowned for fine Thai and international cuisine in a romantic tropical garden and seaside setting.

Guests can choose to dine under the stars, by the sea or in an Ayuthaya-style teak pavilion overlooking the pool. Poppies is the perfect destination for a Chrsitmas celebration, although reservations in advance are needed for Christmas dinner.

Complimentary eggnog is served upon entry – some can be served without brandy so no one misses out. A traditional dinner of butterball turkey with dried apricot and pecan nut stuffing is accompanied by chipolatas wrapped in bacon, fresh vegetables, a choice of roast or mashed potato and either gravy or cranberry sauce.

They even serve Christmas pudding. Every tradition is honoured on this beachfront restaurant. Booking and info.

SALA Samui

In addition to the traditional turkey, SALA Samui offers a seafood buffet to start, a dessert bar to finish and a separate children’s menu is available.

Guests are under the care of international chefs, live music by resident musician Mark James will play in the background and then the evening’s entertainment includes a Thai dance performance by the children of SALA Samui’s staff.

This is a fantastic way to combine some well-loved Christmas traditions with a touch of Thai culture.

Nikki Beach

For something a little more laid back, try going to Nikki Beach for a buffet lunch. The holiday favourites, such as turkey, are served, but dishes such as cottage pie and sushi are also on the menu.

The pool, the loud music and the signature Nikki Beach mojitos always attract a crowd, which means there will be at least 300 new people with whom to celebrate Christmas. Maybe plans could be made for New Year’s’ Eve with new friends!

Tesco -Lotus

Because Thailand is not a Christian country, Christmas is not observed as a national holiday.

This means that all the stores will remain open as usual. If your guests are in the mood for a laid back Christmas with all their favourite treat, visit Tesco-Lotus on Christmas Day to pick up candy canes, a good selection of cheeses and Christmas Pudding.

Christmas Villas in Koh Samui

Christmas in Koh Samui can be magical whether you head out or stay in the luxury of your Samui vacation home. Villa staff are on hand to prepare a Christmas dinner, whether you want turkey and all the trimmings, or a a Thai banquet – the choice is yours!

The Koh Samui rainy season typically runs from October to mid December. While there may be more rainfall during these months, the sun still shines, temperatures remain warm and holiday prices are cheaper.

Here are a few ways to enjoy the Koh Samui rainy season

1) Book a Spa Day

Koh Samui has been voted as Asia’s top spa destination in recent years and there are no shortage of sumptuous spas to choose from. Island favourites include Kamalaya Spa, Six Senses Spa and Tamarind Springs Spa.

Here guests can indulge in back massages, foot rubs, body scrubs and then finish off with a manicure or pedicure.

For further relaxation of the mind, visitors should also consider booking a yoga session, don’t worry if it’s raining as the sound may make for peaceful meditation music.

Many luxury villas in Koh Samui come complete with spa features including infinity-edge pools, jacuzzis, massage salas and villa staff with the option of booking spa treatments.

2) Indulge in Island Delights

If it’s raining outside there’s no better way to pass the time than by sampling the many superb restaurants in Koh Samui.

Local restaurants have rain screens to keep everyone dry, even the ones on the beach so you can sit outside without getting wet.

If the rain must keep you inside why not pass the time by sampling the delicious local dishes.

First fill up on the phat thai (thin rice noodles stir fried with egg, tofu and shrimp) then follow up with kai yang (grilled chicken marinated in fish sauce, coriander root and garlic, served with papaya salad).

Interpret any rainy day as an invitation to indulge in island delights. After all, there’s no rush.

3) Take a Thai Cooking Class

The only thing better than eating out, is learning how to cook some delicious Asian dishes at home.

The Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts (SITCA) offer intensive three-hour cooking classes to professional chefs and visiting novices alike.

Pai Cookery will teach everyone how to make the perfect spring rolls so as to keep up the habit at home. Finally, Smiley Cook will teach a class of four to cook four dishes, including the mysterious mango sticky rice.

Luxury villas may come complete with personal chefs who can be hired for cooking classes in the comfort of your luxury Koh Samui vacation home.

4) Volunteer at the Rescue Centre

The Dog and Cat Rescue Samui foundation (DCRS) looks after all the strays in Samui, providing animal rescue, veterinary clinic and shelter services.

There are two locations in Chaweng and Ban Talig Ngam and they always welcome volunteers, even just for one day.

There are around 350 dogs and 100 cats just waiting to be cuddled, played with and looked after by animal loving tourists. This is not an opportunity to be missed.

5) Don’t Move A Muscle

Watch a movie from your villa media library – many of them have a wide selection – or, if the Wi-fi is particularly good, just stream your favourite show.

Write some postcards, enjoy a drink and just listen to the pitter-patter of raindrops outside your window.

Rain in Koh Samui is not the same as rain back home. It sounds different, the greenery outside smells different, the view on a rainy afternoon is simple stunning.

These are just a few suggestions for how to pass the time during the rainy season but don’t forget that rain showers are often light and pass quickly. Guests can still enjoy plenty of sunbathing and outdoor activities during the rainy season in Koh Samui, book a Koh Samui villa today for a great deal!

The best way to capture the essence of Thai culture is with one of Koh Samui’s famed Thai dinner shows.

These exotic events are held at venues across Koh Samui. Here are some of the best options that combine an exceptional dining experience with entertainment that captures the heart of Thailand…

The Imperial Boat House Resort and Spa: A Taste of Thai Culture
The restaurant at The Imperial Boat House in Choeng Mon invites guests to experience the rich culinary and visual heritage of Thailand. Every Monday evening from 7pm the menu at Captain’s Choice offers a selection of authentic Thai cuisine and several themed buffet nights, but the after-dinner entertainment is the main attraction at this beach-side restaurant. What follows is a show of authentic Thai dancing as performed by professional dancers. This is a tasty and spectacular taste of Thai Culture!

Zazen Boutique Resort: Thai Dance Evenings
The Zazen Restaurant in Bophut is praised as a place of sophistication, romance and intimacy. It is bathed in the glow of hundreds of candles and serenaded by the gentle waves and smooth jazz music. The menu of authentic and exotic Thai cuisine is a food lover’s paradise and a true treat for the taste buds. Every Thursday and Sunday, trained dancers and musicians in dazzling costumes present an evening of traditional Thai dancing to complete your dining experience and demonstrate another spectacular aspect of Thai culture for the enjoyment of their guests.

Poppies: Thai Night
In a romantic tropical garden overlooking the sea, Poppies in Chaweng is pure paradise. Their extensive international and Thai menu is built on fresh ingredients and locally caught seafood. Guests can dine by the sea, under the stars or in the teak pavilion overlooking the pool. If the tempting menu and serene location was not enough, every Saturday at Poppies is Thai night. Professional dancers in elaborate costumes will perform the traditional dances of Thailand, all to the tune of traditional Thai music.

Siam Classic Bophut: Dinner and a Show
Siam Classic is a Thai dance and drama show in The Fisherman’s Village in Bophut. The entertainment consists of six dramatic dance forms; Khon, a formal masked dance-drama depicting scenes from the Ramakian and originally performed only for the royal court; Lakhon, which covers several types of dance-drama (usually for non royal occasions) as well as western theatre; Li-khe, a partly improvised, often bawdy folk play featuring dancing, comedy, melodrama and music; Manohra, the southern Thai equivalent of Li-khe, but based on a 2000 year old Indian story; Nang or shadow plays, limited to Southern Thailand and Lakhon or Hun Luang – puppet theatre. To have the full Thai experience, this show includes a five course dinner so everyone experiences the sights, sounds, tastes and aromas of Thailand. This show includes a mini-bus pick up and drop off to any hotel in Koh Samui. The evening kicks off from 7:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

The Thai Experience
The Thai Experience in Lamai will redefine the term ‘dinner party’. Guests are welcomed with a complimentary cocktail, then seated around a large communal dining table and provided with chef’s hats and Thai aprons. First on the menu is the selection of cocktails. Everyone is shown how to blend fruit juices, liqueurs and syrups to create Me Lychee Long Time, Electric Blue Gin Cocktail and Samui Sunrise Passion Fruit Cocktail. Once the bonding exercise has been completed and sampled, the chefs move on to the three course, fifteen dish meal. Dishes such as fresh crab wonton sandwiches, slow cooked pork leg stew and Thai Tea Tres Leche will enchant everyone and fill all the stomachs in attendance. Along the way, guests will learn how to mix and blend Thai condiments to create perfect dipping sauces and be given the opportunity to quiz the team on any aspects of Thai dining or culture that they have not yet experienced. This is experience is a great introduction to newcomers and a delightful way of making new friends.

From worldwide holidays to local island events such as the Full Moon Parties or annual holidays, Koh Samui has plenty of celebrations where both locals and tourists can participate in the fun festivities.

Songkran: Thai New Year, April 13-15
Songkran (also known as the Water Festival) will bring back fond memories of water fights from everyone’s childhood. This lively Thai festival is a country-wide water fight where Super-Soakers are a must-have accessory. Songkran is celebrated in the middle of the hottest period in Samui. Traditionally, it was intended for everyone to visit family and wash away bad luck for a fresh start in the new year. It is unclear when gentle sprinklings of water over the shoulders of family and friends turned into a full blown water fight, but it does a great job of bringing a country together and spreading good wishes for a new year. Chaweng and Lamai will offer complete bedlam for very enthusiastic visitors, but Choeng Mon and Maenam are quieter locations for those with children. Wearing white on this day is not advisable!

Christmas in Koh Samui
Despite occurring during the Rainy Season, temperature around Christmas range between 26 – 29 oC (79 – 84 oF) – even on cloudy days with a chance of rain, this still means wearing shorts on Christmas. Gala dinners are popular around this season – a gala dinner involves a large buffet, Thai cultural performances, endless drinks and a lively band. Food can include some traditional Christmas options such as eggnog, candy canes and Christmas puddings (sold at Tesco-Lotus). Although Christmas is celebrated in Koh Samui, it is not recognised as an official holiday so the shops remain open as usual. Christmas can be magical anywhere, particularly if someone else does all the cooking and cleaning.

New Year in Koh Samui
New Year’s Eve requires a lot of planning ahead. Restaurants often have set menu dinners that will be steeper in price and generally every restaurant is full so places must be reserved in advance. Local Thai places may be slightly emptier and will not require a reservation, but it would be best to make sure that the venue is open – some places close entirely or host a party for their staff. Planning nightmares aside, Koh Samui can ring in the New Year in style. A rule of thumb is, the bigger the beach the bigger the fireworks, although most hotels will also set off a few rockets. After midnight, the tradition is to set off a flying lantern into the night sky – send it off as a couple, a family or a group of friends and welcome the New Year.

Loy Krathong: Light Festival, November
Translated as “floating leaf cup” this festival of lights is marked by thousands of blazing leaf cups floating in rivers, canals and even hotel swimming pools. The lights are complemented by the vibrant colours seen in the street decorations and the colourful clothing of the women, who also style their hair with flowers. The symbolism of this festival is unclear – some say that as the krathongs float down the river they take the misfortune of others with them while others say they represent a yearly casting off of sins. The most popular interpretation of this festival is that lovers can predict the fortune of their romance by watching their krathongs float in the river; if the floating leaf cups remain together in the darkness it foretells a life-long partnership.

There are various day trips to Ang Thong Marine Park that leave from Koh Samui, each with their own unique package deals, such as lunch, kayaking or snorkelling.

The park consists of 42 different islands, each with their own landscapes, caves and indigenous wildlife. A complete tour of the Ang Thong would actually take weeks due its sheer size and fascinating views. Here is a guide for how to make the most of one day at Ang Thong Marine Park.

Departure

After transferring from the villa to the pier, most tours will depart between 8am and 9am to make the most of the day. They will also a include a light breakfast of croissants, fruit and tea or coffee. If the tour is for specific activity, such as kayaking or scuba diving, they should also come with their own equipment. The best way to travel is by speedboat, as it only takes 45 minutes to reach the park this way.

Koh Mae Ko and Koh Wao

Upon arriving in Ang Thong, the tour boat will dock at either Koh Mae Ko or Koh Wao. Koh Mae Ko is known for its beautiful Emerald Lake, a saltwater lake surrounded by huge limestone cliffs. The Emerald Lake is a spectacular spot with a great view, which can only be reached by hiking up the steep cliffs, through its jungle terrain and squeezing through a deep crevice on the cliff. The reward is an amazing view of the entire Ang Thong archipelago. Swimming and diving is forbidden here

Koh Wao has beautiful turquoise blue water, coral reefs and coves – all these are the homes of interesting marine life, making this little island an excellent spot for snorkelling and diving. The coral is as diverse as the sea life in this crystal clear water. There will be something new for everyone to see.

Explore Ang Thong

Later in the morning, tours will dock at Ang Thong and leave tourists to explore the island. The ‘Golden Basin’ has steep limestone cliffs, some reaching over 400 metres in height, and features four distinct types of forest; dry evergreen, beach, limestone and Mangrove. Each forest is home to many different animals, such as monkeys, otters, eagles, iguanas, pythons and many many more. The surrounding sea is also home to marine life such as sea turtles and many colourful fish. This is a popular spot for snorkelling and swimming.

Lunch

The majority of tours will include lunch. This can vary from a buffet on the seafront or a traditional Thai meal on the tour boat as it cruises through the park. Fresh fruit is also included.

Koh Sam Sao

After lunch, some tours go on to Koh Sam Sao for kayaking. This island receives very few travellers so if the tour passes through here, visitors can enjoy unobstructed swimming, kayaking and snorkelling in the abundant coral reefs and hikers can explore the numerous caves and caverns, or climb up to the vantage points and enjoy the views.

Overnight Accommodation

After visiting a third island most tour boats will take everyone back to Koh Samui and transfer them back to their accommodation, but the fun need not end here. Koh Wua Talap is the island’s camping headquarters. It has six bungalows, which can be rented for 500 Baht per day (for a two bedroom cottage) and plenty of camping space. The cost of hiring a tent for two people is 250 Baht. Additionally, Koh Wua Talap has a restaurant, which is open from 7am until 10pm, a first aid tent and kayaks for rent if guests wish to continue exploring the islands.

The facilities at the island are very basic. Visitors should note that the electricity generator is switched off at 11pm, but it adds to the appeal of camping in a barely inhabited island. No reservations are required for camping but if guests wish to book a bungalow in advance, this can only be done via the Thai government website: http://www.dnp.go.th/parkreserve/reservation.asp

All boats leaving the Ang Thong National Marine Park leave at 3pm daily. Overnight guests can leave by speedboat at 3pm the next day.

Maenam beach an ideal destination for those in search of a quiet beach retreat away from Samui’s busy tourist hot-spots. Here’s a look at things to do when you visit…

Maenam beach is the epitome of perfection as it stretches 7km along the coast with its white, sandy shores lined with coconut trees. Relatively undeveloped, the area is truly charming with exquisite island vistas from every direction.

Samui Disc Golf

Disc Golf originates back to the beginning of the twentieth century but it only started gaining popularity in the 1960s. The aim of the game is to get the disc into the basket – a simple goal, but to win players must achieve this in less throws than their friends and family. Samui Disc Golf has nine baskets to challenge groups and this makes for a great day of friendly competition for friends and family. After the game, visitors can refuel with homemade pizzas, wings and meatballs subs, or the venue will organise a BBQ for the group if they are given 24 hours notice.

Samui Canopy Adventures

The best way to see what Koh Samui has to offer is in style! Samui Canopy Adventures is the most exhilarating way to travel through Samui’s rainforests and lush tropical scenery. Soaring over treetops at nearly 50 mph is something that only monkeys and birds have had the privilege of experiencing, until now. After departing from Maenam Hinterland, a packaged tour includes a 4×4 pick up to base camp, full training and safety instruction, a cable ride to the secret waterfalls of Koh Samui and a complimentary Thai lunch. Canopy Adventures is 2000 metres of zipping fun that no one will want to miss.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing and kiteboarding are very popular water sports in Maenam – its shallow waters, steady wind and warm water make this a year-round activity. It’s popularity means that there are a few schools on the island to teach beginners to master the techniques of this sport. Koh Samui Kiteboarding provides lessons with instructors certified by the International Kiteboarding Association and each lesson is assisted by a rescue boat with a graduate instructor certified in first aid. Everything is in place for novices and experts to enjoy a day out on the ocean.

Black Rose Bar

Being a small area with not much traffic, the nightlife in Maenam would not appear to be as vibrant as that of Chaweng and Bophut. However, this does not mean that the evenings here are dull. The Black Rose Bar is a hidden gem on the western end of Maenam beach, right on the beachfront and it has a great view of the sunset. This Thai-Reggae themed bar has a rustic look, with its thatched roof and furniture made from recycled driftwood. The menu features local Thai food, classic cocktails and beverages and there is also a pool table to complete the low key night out.

Maenam Walking Street

This is a delightful combination that is unique to Thailand; part street party, part farmer’s market. This event happens every Thursday evening around six, but if visitors are driving in then it would be best to arrive early to secure a parking spot as this event is widely popular. Come hungry, with plenty of cash – in addition to stalls selling crafts and trinkets, the walking street includes snack vendors and even mobile cocktail bars selling signature drinks at possibly a quarter of the price of nearby five-star hotels. On some nights there may even be music played by enterprising teens. This lively stroll down the street is an interesting way to spend an evening, where interesting souvenirs are sure to be found.

With miles of stunning coastlines, impressive jungles, gorgeous villages and nearby islands, Koh Samui boasts some of the most beautiful sights in the world. Here’s a guide to the best tours in Koh Samui.

Jungle and Island Safari Tour

Travel on an off-road mountain vehicle to the highest viewpoints in Koh Samui. This tour packs everything into one unforgettable day, including visits to popular tourist attractions like the Big Buddha temple, Grandfather and Grandmother rocks and the Wat Khunaram to see the famous Mummified Monk. Additionally, this tour also includes a visit to monkey and crocodile shows, 15 – 20 minutes of elephant trekking and an afternoon at Namuang Waterfall – the highest waterfall in Koh Samui over 80 metres high. If you had only one day to see the best of this island, this is the way to do it.

Adult: Around 1850 Baht. Child: Around 1400 Baht

Ang Thong Marine Park

The Ang Thong Marine Park consists of 40 little protected islands of outstanding natural beauty. All but one of these islands are uninhabited and undeveloped. The one inhabited island is like a time window into the past where the “sea-gypsies” still make a living through fishing. There are several ways to explore these islands – a speedboat is comfortable and will take you to the park in less than an hour. The speedboat tour can include kayaking and snorkelling, making the most of the clear blue water. But for a slower and easier tour, the Samui Island Tour Co also offers a slow boat tour to the Ang Thong Marine Park. This tour does not offer snorkelling, but does include a visit to the Lotus Caves with stalagmites and stalactites.

Speedboat Tour: Adult; 2000 Baht. Child; 1400 Baht

Slow Boat Tour: Adult; 1700 Baht. Child: 850 Baht

Crazy Horse – Private Charter Around the Islands

Sailing on a Crazy Horse is an interesting and unique sailing experience. It’s a 27ft, twin mast catamaran, known for winning international Regattas. This boat is easy to handle and can be commissioned privately for island hopping around Koh Samui. The Crazy Horse can be hired for half a day (four hours), for a sunset cruise (between 4pm to 6:30pm) or a full day charter around Koh Samui (10am to 5pm). Transfer from hotel, soft drinks and snorkelling equipment are included, so this is a perfect way to go snorkelling on coral reefs and visit the scenic coastline at your own pace.

Prices vary depending on season and number of people hiring the Crazy Horse

ATV Jungle Adventure

These quad bikes and Buggy’s are tough enough to withstand the high mountain terrain, but so easy to manage that only a ten minute lesson is needed before setting off to explore Koh Samui’s vast jungle. Follow your fellow adventurers on a trail through the jungle, passing by some high points at the centre of Koh Samui, stop for a delicious Thai lunch at the top of the mountain, then finish off the day by swimming in the Namuang Waterfall. For more information visit Samui Link.

Prices vary depending on type of bike hired and how many seats needed.

Tailor Your Own Tour

Do you think the jungle tours don’t include enough history? Did you enjoy the elephant trek but wish you could have seen more animals? Tailoring a private tour ensures that there is a little something to leave everyone happy, and it may turn out to be cheaper depending on your group size. The lovely team at Samui Link will put together a VIP itinerary for your group according to everyone’s interests and budget. The more details you give them, the more personalised your tour will be. The cost includes a tour guide, a choice of private car or luxury minivan and the opportunity to make your own schedule. There are many choices of activities and attractions to include in your tour, such as elephant trekking, visiting the Butterfly Garden, seeing a 164 year old Chinese Temple, swimming in the Namuang Waterfall or a tour of a rum distillery, among many others. This tour will make you feel like Koh Samui’s guest of honour.

Cost: 1-2 people: 6900 Baht, Additional person: 800 Baht

When you stay in one of our luxury Koh Samui villas you can rest assured you’ll be located close to everything the island has to offer. Our Koh Samui vacation rentals offer all the facilities you need, in the most gorgeous spots on the island, for the ultimate tropical island break.

The area of Lamai is a simply stunning vacation destination with plenty to do during your stay. Here’s our guide to the top things to do in Lamai, Koh Samui.

From spas, restaurants and shops, to popular historical sites such as Hin Ta & Hin Yai and Wat Khunaram, Lamai is home to plenty of interesting things to see and do. It is well worth hiring a jeep or motorbike to explore the surrounding environs, as many interesting attractions are located on the outskirts of Lamai. Some of the island’s most popular tourist sites are located here such as the phallic Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks and Wat Khunaram, the island’s famous mummified monk – so if you can bear to leave the beach, you could easily fill a few days exploring the area.

Hin Ta and Hin Yai

The Hin Ta and Hin Yai are fascinating rock formations located on Koh Samui’s south coast. These phallic shaped rocks have been a source of wonder since they were discovered by the locals more than 100 years ago.

These rocks, known as Grandpa and Grandma, look vey much like male and female genitalia! Entry to the rocks is free of charge and available all day in daylight hours. the rocks are located on Samui’s south-east coast, about two kilometres south of central Lamai Beach.

Lamai Night Plaza

This nighttime bazaar runs every evening from 5pm at the Lamai Central Plaza. Here, shoppers can find locally made goods such as handmade fans, wooden elephants of all sizes, sarongs, purses and T-shirts and much more.

Do not pay the expected price on any of these items; vendors expect a little bartering for their merchandise, which means that everyone can go home with a bargain. Once all the bartering is over there is a food centre and several pubs to finish off an exciting evening.

Coco Splash Adventure & Water Park

For a day of water-filled fun, turn left at the McDonald’s sign located off Samui Ring Road and follow the signs for Coco Splash Adventure & Water Park.

This park is 10,000 m2 of fun, laughter and thrilling high speed slides that will bring the whole family together.

In addition to the water park, Coco Splash features thrill-seeking activities such as a bungee trampoline, an air bag jump and a tree-to-tree adventures involving aerial rope courses and zip lines. Little adventurers will leave this park happy, exhausted and with their hearts racing.

Lamai Overlap Stone

The Lamai Overlap Stone is one kilometre south of the popular Hin Ta & Hin Yai rocks. Making the journey to this landmark is an adventure in itself – the best way to travel up the dirt-track road is by 4×4 or a dirt bike, with the last stretch being walked on foot.

For those who are looking for more of a challenge, the hard twenty minute climb can be done on foot and there is a refreshment stand waiting for anyone who succeeds in making it to the top. Whatever the route taken, the view at the top is a just reward for the steep trek.

Samui Rock Bar

After visiting the famous Grandfather and Grandmother Rock, the best place to go for lunch is the Samui Rock Bar, where chilled reggae tunes play on the bar’s private beach from 2pm until the early hours of the morning. The bar has typical Thai decor, made from driftwood and recycled material and has a small terrace between two giant boulders with great views of the sea. Come here for live music, nightly fire shows and delicious Thai and international food.

Hua Thanon

Located south of Hin ta and Hin yai, this quaint fishing village still retains a quaint, old-time Samui feel, with rickety wooded houses lining the road, plus some great seafood restauraunts and ethnic clothing and jewellery boutiques. Check out the teak houses put to modern use, with the play station arcades and cars parked in the front rooms!

The Swing Bar

This is the largest club at Lamai Beach, named after the fitted swing seats in the interior. Guests can lounge on the swing seats with a cold beer or a tasty cocktail while enjoying a 180 degree view of the ocean. The menu includes a wide variety of curries, burgers and even a few breakfast options. In the evenings there is a nightly fire show and beach parties happen on Monday and Friday nights for everyone to let out their inner party animal.

Laem Sor Pagoda

This beautiful pagoda is situated at the southern tip of Koh Samui at Bang Kao Beach. The pagoda’s entrance is guarded by two ‘Yak’ (giant) warrior statues with huge swords, colourful clothing and scary faces. Buddha stands in the doorway to the rear, making a great sight and photo opportunity. It’s located eleven kilometres south of Lamai with a tour available via Half Day Samui Adventure

Silver Beach

This gorgeous bay is located just off the main road as you drive into north Lamai from Chaweng. There are three resorts on the beach which means it can get crowded in high season, but it is well worth a visit for the exquisite scenery. Crystal clear waters and white powder sand, bordered by craggy limestone rock formations and lush hills make this beach one to remember.

The gorgeous area of Choeng Mon is located on the northern coast of Koh Samui. A series of powder white bays with plenty of things to see and do – this area is the perfect destination for those in search of a relaxing tropical island vacation.

Choeng Mon is off the beaten track, but this magnificent beach-based destination is within 10-15 minutes of the lively resort of Chaweng, 5 minutes from Big Buddha and near to the charming Fisherman’s Village. Choeng Mon boasts wide sandy beaches with rock formations on one side and a small island you can paddle out to on the other.

Water Sports

Choeng Mon is protected from open water by a headland which makes it a calmer destination for watersports. Tourists can enjoy swimming and snorkelling on the beach and the Searobin Samui PADI Diving Centre offers a full range of scuba diving courses and fun diving tours to suit everyone. Choeng Mon beach is also perfect for sunbathing and just lounging on the seafront, lazing the days away in true tropical island style.

Wat Plai Laem

Big Buddha is not the only major landmark within driving distance of Choeng Mon. Wat Plai Laem is a temple famous for being home to hundreds of big fish – they live in the lake at the temple living off the food fed to them by tourists.

Wat Plai Laem offers an insight into Chinese-Thai culture and features some elaborate and very colourful Buddhist architecture.

The most striking piece is the towering statue of Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy and Compassion, bearing 18 white arms to the sky. Guanyin is believed to be a source of unconditional love and her arms represent her ability to reach out and give help all across the world. Plai Laem beach is also a relaxing spot to swim, sunbathe or read a book.

Art Samui

The Art Samui museum in Choeng Mon is a popular interactive attraction for art lovers and novices alike. It has 65 vast artistic backgrounds complete with areas for tourists to become part of the art, making for some great photos!

Surf the Samui waves, stampede with elephants or fly on a magic carpet with dragons chasing from behind, the choice is yours! The museum offers packages for almost two hours of fun, with tourists taking their own snaps.

The staff are very friendly and accommodating which is sure to make a unique day out even better. Address: 37/45 Moo 5 | Bophut Subdistrict, Choeng Mon, Ko Samui 84320.

Imperial Spa

In Thailand there are more than 163 species of snake, over 900 types of birds, approximately 250 wild tigers and around 650 species of freshwater fish, just to name a few! A visit to Koh Samui is a chance to get to know not only the charming locals, but also some of the native animals that make this island such a unique and memorable holiday destination…

Paradise Park Farm

High in the mountains, overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, lies Paradise Park Farm. This is one of the highest points in Koh Samui and the beautiful waterfalls, rivers, canyons and rainforest covering make it one of the most picturesque spots on the island.

Paradise Park Farm is home to several local animals such as ponies, deers and pygmy goats (which can be petted and fed), friendly monkeys and even Molly and Marcha, the bilingual parrots who will speak to you in either English or Thai! Additionally, the park has two on site restaurants and bars, a children’s playground, jungle and river walks and plenty of rest areas.

There is a swimming pool which can be enjoyed at no extra cost, but guests should bring their own towels. At only 800 Bahts for a visit to the park alone, this is one of the cheapest parks to visit, and it certainly keeps everyone entertained.

Butterfly Garden

This beautifully maintained tropical park is home to hundreds of butterflies, bees and moths. While visiting an insect habitat might not be high on everyone’s list of things to do in Koh Samui, the Butterfly Garden is a popular attraction with adults and children alike, and in particular with aspiring photographers.

Not only is this a breathtakingly gorgeous nature walk with waterfalls, lush tropical plant life and colourful flowers, it is an intriguing insight into insect life. The butterflies are unafraid of human contact and will happily land on walkers’ shoulders and heads, sometimes long enough to take a quick selfie.

Watching these little creatures flitter from flower to flower and sip at the nectar is a delightful experience. If there is a keeper nearby, they will be happy to answer any questions about the species and habits of each butterfly you see.

An insect museum at this location is an extra treat for enthusiasts and it is also a great place to purchase fresh honey made on-site by the bees seen on your walk.

Bannchang Elephant Park

Most tours offer elephant trekking as part of a package and it is understandably popular with tourists. Bannchang Elephant Park is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing a good life for these majestic animals and rescuing elephants from bad conditions such as circuses.

The organisation is funded exclusively by visitors so the park ensures that your time is certainly worth your money. Instead of merely riding the elephants (although this is also an option) visitors are educated on elephant feeding, their daily habits, elephant’s body language and how the trainers create a relationship of respect with their charges.

Visitors will even have the opportunity to bathe, brush and feed their elephant and be taught basic riding skills. Certainly a more memorable and fulfilling experience than mere elephant trekking.

Koh Samui Tiger Zoo and Aquarium

There few other zoos in Koh Samui that offer such an up-close and personal experience as the Tiger Zoo and Aquarium. If visitors are not satisfied with seeing a large variety of sharks, manta rays and catfish, they can complete their marine encounters by feeding sea turtles.

If seeing Bengal tigers perform feats of agility is not thrilling enough, for a few extra Baht, visitors can have their picture taken with these impressive animals or even feed their cubs a bottle of milk.

There are even photo opportunities with owls, parrots and other exotic birds.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

The Ang Thong Marine Park offers more for the active visitor such as snorkelling, kayaking or diving in the clear blue sea, or hiking through the jungles, mountains and waterfalls.

Because it is such a large and undeveloped area, Ang Thong is home to a wide variety of marine life and wildlife – it is up to the visitors to see how many they can find. Bats, otters, sea eagles, hornbills, sea turtles and pythons are some of the wildlife occasionally seen in the forests.

Crabs, oysters, butterfly fish, sting rays and angelfish are but a few of the residents of the coral reefs.

The many animal attractions in Koh Samui are a great way to discover the island and learn more about the local wildlife. Our luxury villas in Koh Samui are easy to reach from anywhere on the island and offer the perfect base from which to head out and about.

Koh Samui may be a mecca for swimming, sunbathing, shopping and spas, but it’s also known for its stunning historical sights.

The island is home to an array of temples, natural attractions and charming villages such as Bophut Fishing Village which serves as a window to the past. With so many places to explore here are some of the most popular historical sights in Koh Samui.

Big Buddha Temple

Built in 1972, this 12 metre high, golden statue is the first sight most tourists see as they fly into Koh Samui. It remains a popular attraction with both tourists and locals, as both gather together to light incense and make offerings of fruit and flowers to the immense sitting Buddha. The stairs leading up to the Buddha’s elevated platform are decorated with fearsome dragons and the platform itself is adorned in blue and gold. It is a beautiful and impressive feat of architecture.

Around the base of the platform is a courtyard where tourists can buy amulets, religious artefacts and other souvenirs, as well as food and refreshments. All tourists are welcome to observe the daily religious rituals, but it is advised to dress respectfully – cover knees and shoulders – as this is a place of worship. Nearby there is also a beach, which has come to be known as Big Buddha Beach thanks to its proximity to the attraction. This is a much calmer location than Chaweng Beach, which is not too far away but far livelier.

Hin Ta Hin Yai (Grandfather & Grandmother Rocks)

Set along the rocky coastline between Lamai Beach and Hua Thanon are the unique rock formations affectionately known as Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. While it may seem strange that a rock formation would attract the interest of so many tourists, it is understandable once they are seen in person. Even the most mature of visitors may find themselves giggling like little children at the rocks that look suspiciously like male and female genitalia.

This formation is so famous with the locals that, inevitably, legends have been told about how the rocks came to be shaped this way. The most popular story tells of an old couple, Hin (Grandfather) Kreng and Yai (Grandmother) Kreng, who felt it was time for their son to get married. They sailed to a neighbouring province to find a suitable bride, but their boatt was caught in a terrible storm and the old couple died at sea. It is said that their bodies turned into the suggestive rock formation as proof of their real intentions.

To reach these rocks, tourists pass through a narrow passage lined with small shops and souvenir stalls. The beach at this location is rocky but the water is clear enough to see a multitude of marine life.

Mummified Monk

When the mummified monk Loung Pordaeng was alive, he was a native of Koh Samui. After a prosperous younger life, he left home at the age of 50 and dedicated himself to the life of a Buddhist monk. He practised many meditative techniques in Wat Khunaram and it was believed that he developed the ability to foretell his own death once he mastered these techniques. In 1973, Pordaeng died while seated in a meditative position. Now he is known as Koh Samui’s famous Mummified Monk.

It is said that when Pordaeng predicted his death, he instructed his followers to cremate him if his body decayed. Otherwise, he was to be kept in a glass casket in the temple as an inspiration for future generations to follow the teachings of Buddha. Since his death, the only parts of his body to have dried out are the eyes. This does not make for a pretty picture, which is why the Mummified Monk now wears sunglasses. Wat Khunaram is an active temple since most people come to pray to the Mummified Monk.

Visiting a corpse on display may seem like a strange tourist attraction but to the local Thai people, death is seen as something to be honoured and revered. In Buddhism, death is accepted as a natural part of life and most Buddhist Thais view it as getting a step closer to nirvana, or an opportunity to be reborn into the next life.

It may be famed for its beautiful beaches and relaxing spas but there are plenty more things to do in Koh Samui than just lazing the days away.

The island boasts a multitude of activities offering something for everyone. Here’s a quick guide to the best activities and sports in Koh Samui…

Water Sports
Koh Samui has no shortage of water sports to keep visitors entertained including jet skiing, kayaking, fishing, boat trips and more. The warm, blue waters and thriving marine life draw experienced and novice divers from around the world to the many diving spots on the island. Chaweng and Coral Cove are popular spots, but there are many more to be found. A tour of the Ang Thong Marine Park will also include snorkelling, kayaking and a memorable visit to the Emerald Seawater Lake. Marine life in Koh Samui includes tuna, red snapper, and barracuda to name just a few, and, if you’re brave enough, whale sharks.

Elephant Trekking
The elephant is Thailand’s national animal and a symbol of royalty and strength. To ride on an elephant’s back is considered an exciting privilege and will certainly be something to write home about. Sitting atop an elephant you’ll effortlessly cut through the jungle path, wade through rivers and travel past Namuag, Samui’s most famous waterfall. The elephant is a gentle creature and he will be a travelling companion that will be remembered fondly. Koh Samui elephant tours start from just a few hundred Thai Baht.

Zip Lining
The Sky Fox cable ride offers some of the best zip lining in Koh Samui. The tour is suitable for guests of all ages, allowing them to slide fro tree to tree for a feeling of pure freedom and exciting speed. The Sky Fox starts off with slower cables taking guests from one station to another during the ride. Riders climb ladders and are clipped to safety valves for total security and peace of mind. Operators lead unclipping and clipping the safety gear as prepare prepare for their next glide. After the Sky Fox ride, a tour guide will lead visitors on a fifteen minute trek through the jungle and to a magnificent waterfall to cool off from all the excitement.

Golf
Santiburi Golf Club This 18-hole championship golf course has been beautifully integrated into the natural hillside terrain to create Asia’s most popular and picturesque golf course. The native coconut trees of Koh Samui have been strategically placed around the area so the wind is always blowing, even in very intense heat. Lessons from PGA professionals are available for beginners and children.

Thai Boxing
Siamese street fighting – better known as Muay Thai Boxing – is the national sport of Thailand. It is a combat sport involving fists, elbows, shins and knees. This brutal sport is considered the most dangerous past-time in Thailand, but the movements involved are graceful to watch. Chaweng offers two boxing stadiums hosting some of the biggest boxing events in Koh Samui and even offers classes to those brave enough to try it out.

Ladyboys (or katoeys) are the famous third sex of Thailand; effeminate men who dress up as beautiful women to entertain locals and visitors alike.

Ladyboys are an accepted part of Thai culture – and are often so beautiful as girls that it’s hard to imagine otherwise.

Ladyboys in Koh Samui
There is often a stigma attached to Thai ladyboys - that they are looking to hook up with handsome foreigners and charge a fee for their company. In some cases this is true however most ladyboys are adorned with fabulous costumes in the hope of entertaining visitors to the island.

Where to Find Ladyboy’s in Koh Samui
Ladyboys can mostly be found in Lamai and Chaweng, where there is and a lively entertainment scene. Some work in standard jobs such as hotel receptionists, waitresses and bar servers and will be happy to talk to tourists about the best places to visit. There are a few bars that will be staffed only by ladyboys; freelancers can also be found hanging outside bars or the cabaret shows.

How to Spot a Ladyboy
Most ladyboys are so pretty that it’s hard to tell them apart from women. In most cases, a ladyboy’s hips will be narrower, their hands and feet larger and their voices a little more forced into a feminine pitch. Some have had their breasts surgically enhanced and are easy to spot by their overly feminine persona and keenness to talk to tourists.

The Cabarets
Chaweng Beach has some of the best ladyboy shows outside of Bangkok. The Starz Cabaret is a comical show featuring them poking fun at each other and on an unsuspecting member of the audience; it’s an uplifting evening with reasonably priced drinks. The Moulin Rouge Cabaret features ladyboys lip synching to songs such as classic Madonna tunes or more modern anthems. Some of the performers may expose their breasts which may not be suitable for children. The Moulin Rouge is the only free entry cabaret show in Koh Samui. Finally, there is Christy’s Cabaret, the oldest and most popular cabaret on Koh Samui. This Vegas-themed club features glamorous performances every night and a dazzling dance floor for everyone’s enjoyment.

Go-Go Bars
These bars are a popular attraction in Koh Samui, usually jam-packed with revellers, go go dancers and Thai ladyboys. The atmosphere can be slightly flirtatious but it does make for an entertaining and memorable evening. The majority of these bars are in Chaweng and Lamai offering small, open-fronted rooms consisting of poles, stools, a bar, a pool table and an array of girls and ladyboys. In lower scale bars the girls will challenge you to a game of pool, and in more upmarket bars they will dance for you instead. The GB Lounge on Soi Mango Street is the oldest and most popular Go-Go Bar in Chaweng, and the women here have been deemed the most attractive on the island.

Etiquette
If you meet a Ladyboy in Koh Samui the polite thing to do is be friendly but firm. Often ladyboys will be friendly and helpful, however sometimes they may offer entertainment for a fee. Visitors should be advised that although ladyboys are a popular part of the cabaret scene in Koh Samui, they may offer private services such as massages, private dancers or more.

Thailand is the hub of Buddhist culture and Koh Samui is certainly not short on grand and beautiful temples. The most popular ones are Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) on the north-east corner of the island, Wat Plai Leam nearby and Wat Khunaram, home to the mummified monk.

Big Buddha is known for its golden, 12 metre tall, seated Buddha statue, which can often be seen by people flying in to the island. It was built in 1972 and is a representation of a moment in a Buddha’s journey of enlightenment when he subdued the temptations and dangers beset on him by the devil by meditating and staying calm. The Wat Plai Leam is also a great feat of architecture, as this temple houses a towering statue of a white 18-arm image of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion. This temple gives visitors a view of Chinese-Thai beliefs and showcases some Buddhist art and architecture.

Nightlife
Koh Samui boasts plenty of entertainment offerings, but the island is at its most lively after dark. Here you will find everything from exotic cabarets, thriving nightclubs and festive beach parties to beach bars, bbq’s, parades and much more.

The full moon party just a short boat ride away in Koh Phangan is an experience that should definitely not be missed. Chaweng Beach is the centre for many evening activities as it has the highest concentration of bars, club and beach parties in addition to being the home of three different cabaret venues. In Chaweng, the Soi Green Mango Street is the best place to find a club or a bar to start off a fun-filled evening. The Green Mango Club is a great attraction for party animals, Henry Africa’s Samui is the best pub style bar in the area and The Ark Club – hard to find, but worth looking for – has an excellent line-up of DJs and sells cheap alcohol in buckets.

Food

With a wide selection of street food, bistros and high end restaurants, Koh Samui has become a renowned culinary destination. Visitors can eat in places that serve traditional Thai cuisine, such as green Thai curry, ‘ho muk talay’ – seafood curry cooked in a coconut – or find traditional Thai sweets in the food markets. But there is no need to limit the taste buds to local specialties. The Barrio Latino in Lamai Beach serves authentic Mexican food while playing salsa beats all night long; Café 69 in Bophut is a new experience of fusion cooking that is both baffling and delicious; and The Boudoir in Mae Nam is a cosy restaurant that serves French-style cuisine in Middle-Eastern décor, perfect for couples in search of an intimate evening.

Relaxation
There is no shortage of spas, spa resorts or spa villas in Koh Samui. Yoga, meditation and cleansing are very big in Thailand and Koh Samui is one of the best places to seek rehabilitation and rejuvenation.

The Eranda Herbal Spa is located on a mountainside, so visitors are surrounded by waterfalls and palm trees while they are treated to Thai massages and facials. The Trinity Yoga Studio has classes that improve inner strength, promote balance in the body and generally improve flexibility. There are a variety of small spas that provide the Dr Fish treatment – where little fish nibble away at dead skin cells and leave skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated – for either the feet or the full body.

Activities
Koh Samui is an island with plenty of exquisite beaches, however, sunbathing and swimming are not the only ways to pass the time.

Koh Samui beaches may be famous for their white sand, crystal clear waters and after-dark parties, but during the light of day they offer various water sports and tours. Samui Bungee offers a bungee jump experience in Soi Reggae on Chaweng Beach for anyone looking for an exhilarating activity.

Additionally, guests can take water taxis or ferry tours to other surrounding islands where activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling and kayaking are offered as a package deal. Other activities in Koh Samui include elephant tours, jungle trekking, golf, Thai boxing, quad tours and much more! Book a holiday in Koh Samui to explore everything this stunning island has to offer.

Chaweng is the most popular beach on the east coast of Koh Samui boasting 6 kilometres of white sand packed with a variety of activities to suit every kind of traveller. Here’s a guide to the top 10 things to do in Chaweng.

Wat Jee Kong Chinese Temple
This temple is a historic landmark reminiscent of a time when Chaweng Beach was the primary residence of Chinese immigrants in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In this area, visitors can also see old houses, monuments and the vibrant Laem Dim market which sells traditional items, crafts and fabrics. The temple itself is a beautiful golden monument, a true tribute to Chinese architecture.

Wat Khao Hua Juk
Visitors who make the climb up to this temple will be rewarded with panoramic views of Chaweng Beach. This small Buddhist temple is in a serene and tranquil atmosphere, making it perfect for meditating or just relaxing in a calm location. The most famous attraction of this temple, however, is the replica of Buddha’s footprint. On the way uphill, visitors can stop at Nathalie’s Art Palace or the Samui branch of Bangkok’s famous Q Bar.

Chaweng Thai Boxing Stadium
Muay Thai boxing – also known as Siamese street-fighting – is a combat sport in Thailand, characterised by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins. Generally the stadium hosts fights on Monday and Friday nights, but guests are advised to check the schedule before visiting. If visitors are feeling very adventurous, they can even sign up for a Muay boxing lesson during their visit.

Samui Bungee Jump
For the best, most exhilarating views of Chaweng Beach, visitors should look no further than the Samui Bungee Jump. Enjoy the beautiful view of the emerald green water and white sand, seconds before flying into the clear blue sky, suspended by a fifty metre crane above the deepest swimming pool in Thailand (five metres deep). The operators have been in business for over a decade and have welcomed over 50,000 satisfied customers, offering the cheapest bungee jump experience in Thailand with a 100% safety record.

Major Cineplex
For a break from the Thai heat, the Cineplex in the Tesco Lotus has three theatres under one roof, playing the latest Hollywood movies and local films. The air conditioning is always very low in this venue, so it is advised that visitors bring a cardigan or shawl to keep warm for the duration of the film. Another thing to note is that before every movie starts, the theatre will play the song of the king. It is good manners to stand and pay respect while the song is playing.

Cabarets
There are three different cabarets in Chaweng Beach, all of them providing fun, entertaining nights out with the intriguing Ladyboys that are a cultural staple of Thailand. They are so beautiful and feminine, that many a curious tourist has had difficulty telling whether or not they are really boys. Sing along to classic, cheesy songs from musicals or the 90s and enjoy the stand-up comedy.

Ark Bar
This is considered to be the number one party destination in Samui, with a DJ playing from 2pm at a Pool Party and on until 2am at their Beach Party. Facilities include three swimming pools, two swim-up pool bars, two beach-front restaurants and live music and fire shows. There will never be a need for party animals to leave this amazing hot spot with spectacular views of the ocean and international DJs playing at all hours.

Eranda Herbal Spa
There has never been a more perfect spa location to maximise relaxation and luxury. The Eranda Herbal Spa is located in the mountainside with gorgeous views of the Gulf of Thailand. This spa is the perfect escape from the outside world. Immersed in the beautiful, natural surroundings, there is nothing here to distract from the spa experience. Visitors can choose from massages, facial treatments and body scrubs, all using a selection of natural herbs and oils, while being serenaded by cascading waterfalls, rustling palm trees and gentle Thai music.

Neptune Club
For the more active visitors to the island, Chaweng offers a variety of ways to keep exercising while on holiday. As well as a variety of water sports on the beach, the Neptune Club is a gym that has memberships to suit the duration of any holiday, from a one day pass to a one year membership. It is furnished with cardiovascular and strength training equipment and includes a sauna and Jacuzzi to help unwind after an intense workout.

Trinity Yoga Studio
No rejuvenation holiday is complete without the inner peace that comes from the union of mind, body and spirit. Yoga is the perfect way to achieve this balance as well as a great way to exercise and introduce some new energy into your life. The Trinity Yoga Studio in the Tesco Lotus will teach you a flow of different postures that will enhance balance in the body and improve overall strength and flexibility. When combined with a relaxing spa treatment, this experience will leave visitors rejuvenated.

Bophut Koh Samui is a large and beautiful beach in Koh Samui, spanning over two exquisite locations – here’s a guide to visiting this exquisite area.

The first location is the main beach, which is easily a thirty minute walk in between the Big Buddha Beach to Maenam beaches.

The second is the quiet and charming Fisherman’s Village, perhaps one of the oldest places on the island, and can be found in the middle section of the Bophut beach. Bophut may be home to several large resorts but development here has not encroached into the serene beauty of the landscape. As you walk along the beach you will see a breathtakingly blue ocean, luscious tropical plants and stunning architecture in the Fisherman’s Village.

Best of Bophut:

Fisherman’s Village

The village has acquired a reputation for being an elegant and well-preserved part of the island. It is a beautiful fusion of old wooden Chinese shop-houses interspaced with new. The modern buildings have been carefully and considerately constructed to match the tone and architecture of the long-standing buildings, but also with a distinctive Mediterranean feel to honour the village’s history as the main French outpost on the island. Here you can find boutiques that sell high quality clothes and jewellery, dive shops that offer scuba lessons, elephant rides in the tropical forest, fishing trips on the local boats and much more.

Fisherman’s Village Walking Street

This part street party, part farmer’s market event is a colourful and lively way to pass time from Friday afternoon to late evening. Hundreds of stalls sell items such as handcrafted souvenirs, clothing and artwork but a majority of visitors go for the food and beverages.

Cocktails can be bought from between 60 -80 baht, food from several bars, restaurants and vendors can be tasted with very little cost and this can all be done while strolling along the beach. After spending an evening like this, it will be clear why walking streets have become increasingly popular in the last five years.

Located about six kilometres east of the Bophut Fisherman’s Village, the Crocodile farm is a rare opportunity to see these fascinating animals up close.

Thailand is one of the world’s top crocodile producers, so there are a lot of species to see here, including Siamese, caiman and saltwater crocodiles. There are also a variety of monkeys and snakes to be seen.

A highlight is a an act where a trainer uses a crocodile as a chair without any protection at all, and then risks his life by sticking his head in the croc’s open mouth. The braver visitors are also allowed to stroke the crocodiles, but only their tails

The best Bophut villas are found on Koh Samui’s northeastern coast, a part of the island known for its peaceful resorts, quiet beaches and upscale holiday communities.

Here you’ll be just moments from Plai Laem beach with its pristine white sand and calm waters thanks to a coral reed a little way offshore.

Bophut villa rentals are ideal if you want to relax near shallow waters with only a few boats or jet skis passing by.

Things to Do in Bophut

Things to do in Bophut include snorkeling on the reef, or heading to one of the area’s excellent bars and restaurants.

There are also a number of prestigious spas to be found close by. Bophut villas are set in a tranquil corner of Koh Samui however some of the livelier spots such as Chaweng are just a short distance away.

Take a short drive to Santiburi Samui Golf Club, home to an 18-hole course in a truly breathtaking setting. Or for those in search of adventure why not take a boat trip to the Ang Thong National Marine Park – this archipelago features numerous deserted islands, all waiting to be discovered.
