In Thailand there are more than 163 species of snake, over 900 types of birds, approximately 250 wild tigers and around 650 species of freshwater fish, just to name a few! A visit to Koh Samui is a chance to get to know not only the charming locals, but also some of the native animals that make this island such a unique and memorable holiday destination…

Paradise Park Farm

High in the mountains, overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, lies Paradise Park Farm. This is one of the highest points in Koh Samui and the beautiful waterfalls, rivers, canyons and rainforest covering make it one of the most picturesque spots on the island.

Paradise Park Farm is home to several local animals such as ponies, deers and pygmy goats (which can be petted and fed), friendly monkeys and even Molly and Marcha, the bilingual parrots who will speak to you in either English or Thai! Additionally, the park has two on site restaurants and bars, a children’s playground, jungle and river walks and plenty of rest areas.

There is a swimming pool which can be enjoyed at no extra cost, but guests should bring their own towels. At only 800 Bahts for a visit to the park alone, this is one of the cheapest parks to visit, and it certainly keeps everyone entertained.

Butterfly Garden

This beautifully maintained tropical park is home to hundreds of butterflies, bees and moths. While visiting an insect habitat might not be high on everyone’s list of things to do in Koh Samui, the Butterfly Garden is a popular attraction with adults and children alike, and in particular with aspiring photographers.

Not only is this a breathtakingly gorgeous nature walk with waterfalls, lush tropical plant life and colourful flowers, it is an intriguing insight into insect life. The butterflies are unafraid of human contact and will happily land on walkers’ shoulders and heads, sometimes long enough to take a quick selfie.

Watching these little creatures flitter from flower to flower and sip at the nectar is a delightful experience. If there is a keeper nearby, they will be happy to answer any questions about the species and habits of each butterfly you see.

An insect museum at this location is an extra treat for enthusiasts and it is also a great place to purchase fresh honey made on-site by the bees seen on your walk.

Bannchang Elephant Park

Most tours offer elephant trekking as part of a package and it is understandably popular with tourists. Bannchang Elephant Park is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing a good life for these majestic animals and rescuing elephants from bad conditions such as circuses.

The organisation is funded exclusively by visitors so the park ensures that your time is certainly worth your money. Instead of merely riding the elephants (although this is also an option) visitors are educated on elephant feeding, their daily habits, elephant’s body language and how the trainers create a relationship of respect with their charges.

Visitors will even have the opportunity to bathe, brush and feed their elephant and be taught basic riding skills. Certainly a more memorable and fulfilling experience than mere elephant trekking.

Koh Samui Tiger Zoo and Aquarium

There few other zoos in Koh Samui that offer such an up-close and personal experience as the Tiger Zoo and Aquarium. If visitors are not satisfied with seeing a large variety of sharks, manta rays and catfish, they can complete their marine encounters by feeding sea turtles.

If seeing Bengal tigers perform feats of agility is not thrilling enough, for a few extra Baht, visitors can have their picture taken with these impressive animals or even feed their cubs a bottle of milk.

There are even photo opportunities with owls, parrots and other exotic birds.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

The Ang Thong Marine Park offers more for the active visitor such as snorkelling, kayaking or diving in the clear blue sea, or hiking through the jungles, mountains and waterfalls.

Because it is such a large and undeveloped area, Ang Thong is home to a wide variety of marine life and wildlife – it is up to the visitors to see how many they can find. Bats, otters, sea eagles, hornbills, sea turtles and pythons are some of the wildlife occasionally seen in the forests.

Crabs, oysters, butterfly fish, sting rays and angelfish are but a few of the residents of the coral reefs.

The many animal attractions in Koh Samui are a great way to discover the island and learn more about the local wildlife. Our luxury villas in Koh Samui are easy to reach from anywhere on the island and offer the perfect base from which to head out and about.

Like with any holiday destination, it is important to be aware of the local dangers and to keep yourself and your belongings safe.

Koh Samui is just as safe as any European city – the island has some of the friendliest and most helpful locals that you will ever encounter – so no one should feel unsafe during their stay. That said, accidents can happen so visitors should exercise the same caution here as they would at home.

Pick-pocketing and Petty Theft

This is not considered a real problem in Koh Samui, but the island is a place where tourists out-number the locals. Theft in busy places such as the full moon parties is more likely to be committed by foreigners than locals.

When visiting a busy place such as a nightclub, bar, shopping centre or marketplace it is advised to bring only the money that you intend to spend and nothing else. In general it is not a good idea to walk around with an open handbag. Valuables, passports and other travel documents should be kept in a hotel safe but it is a good idea to keep a copy of your passport on your person.

Road Accidents

Scooters and motorbikes are the most common vehicles on Koh Samui and are the cause of most road accidents. When riding a scooter, be sure to wear a helmet and keep an eye out for dogs running out into the street as well as any other hazards. Be aware of sand on the road, as most accidents occur when the driver loses control in loose sand. Riders should also beware of the ‘Samui Tattoo’ – a burn on the leg calf caused by hot exhaust from the scooter.

Safety When Walking

While most areas are well lit by street lighting, the overall public lighting at night can be sporadic, leaving pedestrians invisible to drivers.

In some places this can be exacerbated by potholes and erstwhile traffic. Visitors are advised to wear bright clothing at night and to carry a torch in their bags. Women are especially advised to walk in groups after dark.

Beach Safety

As with any other beach holiday, protection from sun damage is very important. Be sure to stay hydrated, wear a sun cream with a high SPF factor and in particular apply it to the back of the neck and ears when snorkeling.

When enjoying water sports such as kayaking, always ask for a water jacket. Remember to pay attention to the flag warnings before stepping into the water. The sea may appear calm, but underlying rip currents do exist. During monsoon season waves can get very high so do not venture out if you are not a strong swimmer.

Scams

Unfortunately this is one of the bigger problems in Thailand, but they are easy to avoid when you take the right precautions.

When renting a car, scooter or a jet ski, it is wise to take pictures of their condition before taking them out for a ride. It is not unheard of to be overcharged for damages that were caused by previous users.

It may be better to rent these through your luxury villa in Koh Samui instead of with an independent seller. Do not assume that someone is not scamming you because they are not from Thailand; foreigners are just as likely to be scammers as the locals. Never take anyone up on a “great deal” – there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Koh Samui is a wonderful place to visit and is well known as being a very safe and friendly holiday hotspot. Like with any trip abroad the best thing to do is be cautious and exercise common sense.

Koh Samui is just 25 kilometres long and 21 kilometres wide with a ring road linking its beaches and other attractions.

You can rent a car and drive around in little over an hour – or travel by scooter, taxi, songthaew, bus or boat. Whatever you decide to do and no matter what your budget you’re sure to find an easy way of getting around in Koh Samui

Foot
The most cost-effective way of getting around is by foot. Many villas in Koh Samui have restaurants and beaches located just a short walk away. If you’re staying near to one of the larger beaches you will never be far from shops, bars, restaurants and local entertainment. Walking and hiking are both excellent ways of exploring and seeing all the island has to offer. Take care at night however as streetlights are few and far between.

Songthaew
Samui boasts an excellent public transport network of songthaews. These are the most popular form of transport in Koh Samui with dozens of them circling the island on fixed routes all day. They are basically pick-up trucks with bench seats with enough room for about 10 travellers. There are no fixed stops but you can flag one down almost anywhere and ring the bell or bang on the roof to get off. During the evenings many songthaews operate as private taxis, so it’s necessary to negotiate a fare before getting aboard. Expect fares to start at around 20 baht for a short trip – this is paid at the end of the journey. This is the cheapest way of getting around the island next to walking, an unexpected way of making friends and it can be the most interesting way of seeing the sights.

Taxis
There are many yellow, metered, air-conditioned taxis available for hire in Koh Samui however many drivers are not keen to turn on their metres so prices can be very high. Taxis can be found in all towns and circling the ring road but before you jump in it is recommended to negotiate rates in advance. If you’re feeling adventurous then try a scooter taxi. These are cheaper than a traditional taxi and easy when travelling alone.

Scooters and Car Hire
Scooters are the cheapest option and are the most common form on transport in Koh Samui and readily available across the island. Expect to pay around 200 Baht per day for a bike and around 800 Baht for a car. This form of transport may be popular however visitors should be aware that Koh Samui has many steep, sandy roads and some of the highest accident rates in the country. Honda Dreams are the most common bikes available to rent however Yamaha Nouvo’s are recommended as they are fully automatic and therefore much easier to ride. Foreigners riding bikes without safety helmets will be fined around 500 baht which must be paid immediately at a nearby police station. It is also important to know in advance that insurance does not exist for motorbikes therefore riders are liable for any danger and it’s almost always the foreigner’s fault. Car hire ‘bargains’ sometimes come without insurance and are therefore a risky proposition. Any established company such as Budget or Avis will include comprehensive insurance in the rental.

Bicycles and Boats
Samui is a hilly area with plenty of off road areas to explore. If you are physically fit then bikes are a perfect mode of travel in Koh Samui. Good quality mountain bikes are available for hire around most places. Boats are a great way to explore the island’s waters or to visit one of the many nearby islands such as the Angthong Marine park. Boat trips and tours are easily affordable and are available to book in most towns and beaches in Koh Samui.

Before going on Koh Samui villa vacation it’s a good idea to know before you go what to pack and what not to! Here’s a handy guide to packing for Koh Samui to make your departure as easy as possible.

Know Before You Go

Thailand is a very modest country and although the locals are used to the casual dress of tourists, it may be a good idea keep your knees and shoulders covered. Using the ‘knees and shoulders’ rule as a guide, stick to packing long shorts and light cotton or linen shirts. Sundresses are acceptable day wear but leave your jeans behind as it will be far too hot to walk comfortably in these. The typical Thai may dress modestly but the rules are bent for tourists around the beaches and resorts, where shorts and t shirts are the norm.

What to Wear When Sightseeing in Koh Samui?

When sightseeing and walking around the island, everyone should opt for day wear rather than beach wear. Comfy sandals are great for wandering around, as they don’t require socks and are easy to slip on and off. Just make sure they have a good grip for safety. Remember to pack running shoes if you plan on taking part in any tours or keeping fit in the Koh Samui villas gymnasiums. During rainy season, a light sweater or cardigan will be enough to keep out the chill. Ponchos and umbrellas are also readily available around the island.

Packing for the Beach

At the beach, bikinis and swim trunks are fine but women should be aware that breast exposure is not the norm in Thailand. This also applies to breast-feeding in public. Once you’ve left the beach, be sure to remove your beachwear in a restroom cubicle or somewhere private and slip back into your day wear. Local vendors are often seen selling beach wear along Koh Samui’s beaches.

What to Wear in the Evening

Sometimes you will want to party so don’t be afraid of dressing to impress. Women can wear anything in the bars and clubs, including shorts, t shirts and evening dresses. Men should consider wearing long trousers and collared shirts to restaurants however visitors often wear shorts in nice venues.

Dressing for Koh Samui Temples?

Modest clothing that abides by the ‘knee and shoulder’ rule is a strict dress code in the temples in Koh Samui. Women may want to consider knee length or long skirts, long shorts or trousers and preferably closed-toed shoes. A pashmina or long scarf is your best friend here as it can either cover your shoulders or function as a longer skirt. The same rule applies to men. Keep it modest with covered torsos, sleeves and legs.

Pack light!

Villas in Koh Samui come equipped with laundry facilities and villa staff so pack light as you can wear the same thing twice.

Extra Essentials

Koh Samui boasts year round sun so be sure to bring hats and sun cream and after sun. Items such as tampons, deodorant and razors are not easy to find on Koh Samui so make sure you are well stocked for your trip.

The boutique island of Koh Samui is exotic, interesting and unforgettable which is why it’s fast becoming one of the most popular vacation destinations for tourists and travellers all over the world. Here’s a guide to why so many travellers book a vacation in Koh Samui.

Taking to the water also offer the promise of underwater adventures like snorkelling or diving. Most boats come complete with delicious cold drinks, food and a highly trained crew to make sure your time on the water is as memorable as on the land.

To Infinity and Beyond

Boasting sun, sea and miles of powder-white sands, Koh Samui is every beach lover’s dream. This picture-perfect island is fringed with some of the best beaches in the world, with each offering something slightly different from the next.

Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui

There are six main beaches in Koh Samui, spanning across the island’s north and eastern coasts. Chaweng and Lamai on the east side are by far the liveliest with an array of activities and entertainment at any time of the day or night. The northern beaches of Big Buddha, Bo Phut, Choeng Mon and Mae Nam are more peaceful, boasting an abundance of tropical island charm. Whether you’re in search of a tranquil treat or bustling beach buzz, Koh Samui’s diverse bays offer something to suit all tastes. Here’s a handy guide to help you find the best beach in Koh Samui…

Chaweng Beach
The renowned Chaweng is Koh Samui’s most popular tourist resort. Here you will find an endless array of shops, hotels, restaurants and bars as well as the longest beach on the island. Chaweng Beach is divided into three diverse sections, all with their own charm and delights. The northern end is the quietest part with a stunning sandy headland and a shallow channel separating the main beach from the smaller island of Koh Matlang. Many luxury villas in Koh Samui are located here; just a stone’s throw the warm shallow waters and palm-fringed shore.

The central area of the beach is most popular with tourists. Expect sun bathers and beach vendors galore, with water sports equipment to rent from an array of outlets along the main strip. Entertainment is on offer both night and day, with live music, Thai dancing and many bars to enjoy. There are plenty of beachside restaurants to choose from, most providing cushions on the sand for a guests to lay back and enjoy the atmosphere.

The south end of the beach is the widest part and hosts many of the island’s events including the annual Samui Regatta. A few steps away from the sand is Chaweng’s main strip where you’ll find 5 kilometres of shops and stalls, restaurants and bars, pharmacies, opticians, supermarkets and more.

Lamai Beach
For those in search of something a little more family-friendly, Lamai Beach is one of the best beaches in Koh Samui. Known as the second most popular beach on the island after Chaweng, this sweeping bay stretches as far as the world famous Hin Ta and Hin Ya formations. To the north of the beach is Tong Takian Bay, set amidst lush green mountains; a stunning spot to explore for locals and visitors alike.

The town itself sits back around 100 metres from the main beach, offering an excellent selection of shops and services. Lamai nightlife is not for the faint-hearted, with plenty of bars and nightlife located in the middle of the main street. Restaurants can be found in abundance, with something to suit all tastes and budgets. There are plenty of gorgeous Koh Samui villas located in Lamai, conveniently situated in private developments yet close to the bustle and facilities nearby. Lamai boats an array of attractions including temples, a small zoo and charming local villages and stunning viewpoints to explore.

Bangrak Beach
Also known as Big Buddha Beach, this bay is named after Ko Samui’s famed 12-metre Buddha statue towering overhead. The beach here is located on the northeast coast just a short drive from Chaweng, although the atmosphere here is far calmer. Bangrak boasts wide undulating sands lined with resorts, restaurants and shops. As with all of Koh Samui, it’s easy to find water sports vendors and tour operators offering energetic activities in abundance. From here visitors can take a boat across to Koh Pha Ngan for the full moon party or visit the enormous Big Buddha statue which can be seen by air on arrival to the island.

Bophut Beach
Bophut Beach is the perfect peaceful spot during a Koh Samui holiday. Located far from the madding crowd Bophut is also known as Fisherman’s Village – a traditional and well preserved part of Koh Samui. The centre of the beach is home to an array of charming wooden houses, perfectly in keeping with the natural surroundings. The beach itself stretches for more than two miles, boasting immaculate powder white sands and rows of tropical coconut palms. A small number of boats are still used for fishing here and Bophut is known for its laid-back family-friendly allure. The village itself is great to explore with an excellent selection of bars and eateries, plus a ‘walking street’ event every Friday featuring live music and performances plus food, clothes and jewellery stalls.

Mae Nam Beach
Perhaps the prettiest beach in Koh Samui, Mae Nam is a must-see spot during your Koh Samui vacation. This tranquil bay is one of the most picturesque places on the island with fine gold sand, an azure ocean and a perfect view of Koh Pha Ngan in the distance. Mae Nam is a remote beach, perfect for lazing the days away in the warm Samui sun. At the west end is the Wat Na Phra Lan temple, great for sightseeing. There’s also the Lomprayah Pier, with regular boats trips over to Koh Tao and Koh Pha Ngan. The stunning John’s Garden is a great spot to eat, particularly popular with couples and honeymooners. Mae Nam also hosts a weekly ‘walking street’ selling snacks, clothing, jewellery and much more. This beach is also the closest to Nathon, the administrative centre of Koh Samui.

Choeng Mon Beach
Nestled in the far northeast corner of Koh Samui, Choeng Mon Beach is best known for its quiet, secluded bays. Home to some of the best accommodation in Koh Samui, this area is popular with couples, families and the more discerning luxury traveller. The main beach is one of the best beaches in Koh Samui, with plenty of water sports options and kayak trips over to Koh Fan Yai island. Away from the beach are a few fantastic restaurants and great resorts for drinking and dining in Choeng Mon. Chaweng in the south and Bophut and Big Buddha Beach to the west are easily accessible for those in search of a more active itinerary. Songthaews operate here, as do taxis, for guests looking to visit other parts of the island – alternatively motorbike and car hire in Koh Samui can easily be arranged.

It can be tricky trying to decide where to take the kids on holiday. Some people may think that once they have kids their days of long distance travelling and seeing the world are over but that needn’t be the case.

Koh Samui is a great place for children with its sandy beaches and numerous activities to keep them occupied.

Family on Beach

A luxury villa on the beach is perfect for families, especially those with young children as it eliminates the need to pack up everything you would need for a day at the beach. Since Koh Samui beaches have very low tides in the summer months, many of the beaches have great amounts of space where you can play beach games like football, volleyball or cricket. The younger children will also have a great time exploring the rock pools and finding beautiful tropical seashells.

Many villas also come complete with babysitting facilities which means that you can enjoy some quiet time and soak up the relaxing surroundings, get a massage or go out for a delicious dinner with your partner. The local people in Koh Samui are also very friendly towards young children and will always make you feel welcome.

When it comes to food and drink there are plenty of options for eating out with kids, alternatively it can be an added bonus to know that you can plan meal times at the villa. Many villas even come with an in-house chef who can cook for you which gives the experience of eating out without having to worry about leaving the villa with smaller children. If you do intend on eating out, it is a good idea to invest in a portable high chair for the little ones because most Thai restaurants will not provide child seating. It is possible to purchase small chairs that screw onto the table top and will fit nicely inside the baby bag.

Taking the young children on holiday doesn’t have to be stressful. A luxury villa in Koh Samui will provide the perfect base for you and your children in a safe and comfortable environment with the added bonus of having the sea just a few metres away as well as plenty of space to keep the little ones entertained.

One of the great things about staying in a luxury villa in Koh Samui is the fresh and delicious food available to indulge in.

Many villas come with the option of an in-house chef who will take away the stress of cooking during your stay. The villas come with a menu from which you can choose your meals throughout your holiday. Villas do also offer self-catering options if you would prefer to cook your own meals. Prior to your arrival it is also possible to have the villa pre-stocked with all your favourite bites.

However, if part of the lure of visiting Samui is to explore the island and taste the local cuisine then there are many places on the island to do so. There are a whole range of different restaurants and eateries to suit any mood. The food is not exclusively Thai and most restaurants will offer alternatives to traditional Thai cuisine. There are also a whole host of different restaurants including, French, Mexican, Italian, English, Brazilian and Indian.

One of the reasons that food on Samui is so special is because of the great range of fresh ingredients that are available. The fishing village of Hua Thanon is known for providing the island with some of the best and most reasonable fresh fish and seafood on the island. Add to this a delicious selection of meats and poultry, a mouth-watering selection of tropical fruits and vegetables and distinctive herbs and spices and you have yourself a recipe for a lifelong love affair with Thai cuisine.

There are many comprehensive guides available as to where the very best restaurants are and what you can expect from them, and there are places to eat that the whole family will enjoy.

Many people recommend exploring the local cuisine by finding places to eat off the beaten track or by sampling the delights of the local food markets. A great way to find a great place to eat is to look for the places where the locals are eating rather than the place that looks the fanciest. The locals know the area and where to get great food at great places so use this to your advantage and trust them, especially when you are looking for traditional Thai food.

The biggest selection of restaurants and places to eat are based in Chaweng and Lamai which are the more central beachside locations, but no matter where you are on the island a great meal is never far away and often you won’t even need to leave the villa.

Koh Samui, an island off the Southeast coast of Thailand, epitomises the natural beauty and quaint island life synonymous with tropical Southeast Asia.

White sandy beaches, studded with coconut trees and a clear ocean, Koh Samui is the idyllic island getaway transporting visitors to a world that is picturesque and entrenched in a relaxed beach culture.

Koh Samui is considered part of the southern province of Surat Thani and unlike other popular islands in Thailand, it is relatively dry. With a warm and tropical climate, Koh Samui experiences only a short rainy season providing the opportunity to cater for sun loving tourists, whereas other islands like Phuket encounter rain for almost 6 months in the year. However, be prepared for sudden showers that last for less than an hour which are typical of any tropical island.

Life in Koh Samui revolves around the coast due to the almost uninhabitable mountainous forests in the centre of the island and this beach culture is reflected in the friendly and relaxed demeanour of the residents; their lifestyle, cuisine and past times. The economy of Koh Samui is dependent on tourism, meaning that you can expect all the services and facilities you may require to have a comfortable, safe and enjoyable holiday on the island. The growing popularity of Koh Samui as a tourist destination has seen five star hotels, luxury modern beach villas with private pools and world renowned restaurants sprout up along most of the island.

Fun and activities in Koh Samui are not isolated to the beach and water sports, although there is no shortage of such sporting activities; like kayaking, scuba diving, snorkelling, kite surfing and speed boating. You can also play a few rounds of golf on Koh Samui’s golf course, watch the nature shows or spend a day in Ang Thong National Marine Park. For the shopaholics and foodies, Koh Samui has a plethora of shops, eateries and bars to ensure that all your fancies are catered for, with most establishments catering for western tastes.

For the demanding traveler who wants a mix of culture, cuisine and coastlines, Koh Samui reflects the best that Southeast Asia has to offer. A multitude of cultures coalesce into a uniquely Thai experience coupled with some of the best weather and beautiful beaches in the world. Koh Samui is a one stop destination for any visitor to Thailand, offering a distinctly Asian experience coupled with all the amenities and activities that one would expect on an overseas beach holiday.

Oh boy, is there! Here are a few to add to your list of What To Do With The Kids …

At Chaweng Beach there’s the Aquapark for anyone over 5 years of age, where there are giant inflatables to leap onto, and off. This is a designated area cordoned off from the main ocean and all visitors are provided with life vests. Cost is 500 baht per person for a day, and 350 for a half day. By all accounts an exhausting activity!

Coco Splash Waterpark is at Lamai Beach. This waterpark has 7 slides, 4 pools, a Jacuzzi, waterpolo and pool-side activities too such as table tennis. Children under 90cms tall get free entry, children 90-130cms are 350 baht and over 130cms 450 baht. A 4-person family pass costs 1500 baht. There is a restaurant, and the adults can also enjoy a massage.

Samui Frisbee Golf at Maenam is a new venture for all ages that is proving very popular. The course has 9 holes, is very shady, and has separate tee areas for beginners and advanced players. The owner, Nigel, explains all the rules and techniques – and he also runs a pizza restaurant on the side! Costs are 50 baht for children, 100 baht for adults.

Treasure Island Mini Golf is near the Big Buddha at Bophut. This course has 18 holes and is a great way to spend an afternoon. Price: 400 baht for adults, 200 for children under 12.

An elephant trek through some of the backwater jungle areas of the island can be a good family outing, and can be organised through one of the many nature tour groups on the island. Cost will be approximately 700 baht for an adult, 500 for child between 4 and 10 years old for a 30-minute trip is. Or 1200 and 800 for an hour.

Older kids might enjoy the adventure of the Treetop Tour Cable Ride, inland from Maenan close to Magic Garden on one of Samui’s highest mountains. Zip through the treetops, 780 metres of cable, safe, fun and exciting….

Some of the most popular for children are -

Samui Aquarium and Tiger Zoo, close to the Samui Orchid Resort in the south of the island, where there are plenty of live shows and you can have your photograph taken with a big cat.

Koh Samui Butterfly Garden, close to Buddha’s Footprint in the south of the island, where there are also moths, and insects, and beehives.

The Crocodile Farm, near the airport, is also very popular, especially with boys for some reason! Entrance costs 100 baht for an adult, and 75 for children. There are also snakes, monkeys, caimans, alligators and lizards.

Many Koh Samui villas have been specifically designed for families with younger children in mind. Some villas have connecting doors between the master and adjacent bedroom, others have colourful adventure bedrooms designed and equipped with children in mind. Some have a shallow area in the pool for the younger ones and there are usually plenty of televisions and child-friendly DVDs once they are exhausted by all the outdoor activities!

Koh Samui is one of the world’s top destinations for renting luxury villas. The stunning views and unspoilt locations make it perfect for a holiday spent pampering yourself in a tropical paradise.

There are so many different villas out there in all shapes and sizes but if you really want the very height of luxury then this blog post will let you know what to expect from a higher end luxury villa.

Location, Location, Location! If you really want to enjoy this stunning island at its very best then the villa you choose should be situated on the beachfront. There are gorgeous villas dotted all the way around the island and they have spectacular views and often direct beach access, meaning that you can step onto the beach from the villa itself.

To Infinity and beyond! A luxury villa is not a luxury villa without a pool. Whether you want to dive right in and cool off or dangle your toes while sipping a cocktail, an infinity pool is the perfect addition to a luxury villa. Some villas even come with projector screens in the pool area as well as swim-up bars adding those extra touches of luxury.

Facilities Galore! Luxury villas really go all out to ensure that your holiday accommodation is packed full of everything you could possibly need. You can expect to find state of the art televisions and sound systems as well as Wi-Fi for those of you who like to stay connected. They also go all out to make sure that the villa is decorated to offer top levels of style and comfort.

The bedrooms usually come complete with en-suite luxury bathrooms. There are often outdoor as well as indoor showers as well as terrazzo bathtubs. There are also plenty of villas where the bedrooms come with private balconies overlooking the sea for those times when you want to relax away from the rest of the party.

Be Looked After: Many of the villas come with staff that are there to make your stay as relaxing as possible, this can include cooking delicious meals, manning the outdoor bar areas and some villas even come complete with treatment rooms so you can enjoy a relaxing massage or spa session with a professional.

There is all this and so much more available in a luxury holiday villa so why not browse the luxury villas on our website and start planning that holiday.

Many people might rule out Koh Samui as an appropriate holiday destination to take the youngsters. However, Samui has much to offer a young and active family who want a holiday experience that they will never forget.
Renting a villa can be the most practical accommodation option for those looking for somewhere stress-free to stay. A villa gives you all of the comforts of home as well as the freedom to create your own holiday itinerary and keep the children’s eating and sleeping routines as regular as you wish with no scheduled meal times and no late returning hotel rooms to interrupt sleep.
Most villas are extremely family friendly and come with a swimming pool and cooking facilities as well as televisions and DVD players which are sure to keep the kids entertained when they want a break from the sunshine. Alternatively there are places to take the kids if you need to be inside for a while such as indoor air conditioned bowling alley and cinema with a good range of films for adults and children, at the Tesco Lotus near Chaweng. For the child who isn’t up for Thai food there also a range of western style and fast food restaurants in this area.
There are many activities in Koh Samui that cater specifically to kids, especially those in the slightly older age bracket. As well as swimming in the sea, there are a whole range of sports for children to take part in. There is a carefully designed mini golf course in Choeng Mon as well as a chance to play the quirky hybrid game football-golf which involves using your feet to guide a football round an obstacle course, perfect for an aspiring little golfer or footballer.
If you are a particularly safety conscious family then you may be interested to know that Koh Samui is located in a Tsunami free spot.
If you just want simple family fun in one of the most beautiful and idyllic places in the world then Koh Samui could be just what your family needs.

Everyone wants that holiday at least once in a lifetime where they live like royalty, experiencing the finest lifestyle that a holiday can offer. As much as most people lust after that kind of holiday, most people feel that luxury villas and beachside locations are out of their reach, and of course their price range.
However, an amazing luxury holiday could be well within your sights and your holiday budget. When people think of Thailand they usually think of backpacking students, full moon parties and sleeping on the beach. However, In Koh Samui there is so much opportunity for tranquil relaxation.
There is a whole range of accommodation options available which convey the very essence of calm and tranquillity and if it is a real sense of privacy and freedom that you require then a villa could be the best option for you.
Villas in Thailand offer world class facilities and services ensuring that all your needs are catered for in your own private villa. From the more luxurious beach villas in Thailand to the budget friendly villas, you can stretch out in comfort in your own self-catering villa with the freedom and flexibility to plan your own itinerary. Prices for villas in Thailand may vary depending on your personal preferences, size of your family or travel group and your budget but the wide selection of villas ensures that there is a suitable villa for every traveller’s individual needs.
If you do feel like taking a break from the confines of the villa then there is a lot to explore on Koh Samui from idyllic beaches to amazing restaurants and even hiking and golf if you venture further inland.
There are also a wide range of tours and activities to undertake, such as visiting the Big Buddha Temple which sits majestically off the north eastern corner of Koh Samui. You can also take island tours which take roughly half a day and show you parts of Koh Samui that you might not see otherwise like the monkeys that work at the coconut plantations. For the adventurer in you there are also plenty of opportunities to try your hand at water sports such as water skiing, scuba diving, snorkelling and kayaking.
So renting a Koh Samui Villa could provide that dream holiday that you thought you could never afford. Imagine lazy days in your luxury villa followed by evenings taking in the beautiful surroundings at beachside restaurants, what could possibly be better?

Singapore’s SilkAir is stepping up its flight cooperation with Bangkok Airways to make Koh Samui its third port of call in Thailand.

SilkAir will offer three flights a week from Singapore to Koh Samui under a code share with Bangkok Airways. The regional wing of Singapore Airlines will begin offering three flights a week from the city-state to Koh Samui on Sept 27, using Airbus A319s that feature both business and economy class cabins.

Already serving Phuket and Chiang Mai from its Changi airport hub, SilkAir is moving to tap new traffic opportunities on Thailand’s second-largest island, which is especially popular among Westerners. SilkAir will cooperate with Bangkok Airways, the privately owned airline that dominates traffic Koh Samui’s air traffic, by establishing a code-share partnership on SilkAir-operated flights. The arrangement will include Bangkok Airways’ existing daily flights between Koh Samui and Singapore.

Bangkok Airways also code shares on SilkAir’s Singapore-Chiang Mai and Singapore-Phuket routes. As well, SilkAir will code share on Bangkok Airways’ Bangkok-Koh Samui, Koh Samui-Phuket and Chiang Mai-Koh Samui corridors.

Peter Wiesner, Bangkok Airways’ senior vice-president for network management, said the arrangement for the Singapore-Koh Samui route would allow it to drive more traffic. “We plan to capture traffic from Singapore as well as through traffic from long-haul routes connecting from major aviation hubs such as Singapore’s Changi airport.,” he said.

SilkAir is Bangkok Airways’ latest code-share partner after Thai Airways International, EVA Air, Etihad, Air Berlin, Air France and KLM.

The true traveller is he who goes on foot, and even then, he sits down a lot of the time. Colette (1873-1954) Paris from My Window, 1944

When you’re on holiday you may not want to spend each and every day lazing round the pool reading, or paddling with the children on the beach: you might want to get out and about for a day or two, see a few different towns, temples, sights – and let’s not forget the shops.

You can walk, hire a car or bike, catch a taxi, bus, train, plane or ferry. Ko Samui may be a small island, but it has good communication and transport facilities, even if some of the roads might be a bit rough, especially after the rains!

Walking is probably my favourite way of seeing around the island: you are not cut off by glass windows; you can stop when you want to; you will know exactly (one hopes!) where you are going; and you can time your outward journey so that your homebound one gets you back in good time for a shower before the all-important sundowners and supper.

It does get hot though! So make sure you have a map, take water, sunscreen, a hat, and wear good walking shoes. Take a mobile phone with you, and contact numbers just in case of an emergency. If you’d rather not do it alone, then this website gives good advice, and contact information so that you can join them on their various hikes into the hills: http://walksamui.blogspot.com/2011/01/walk-and-live-in-koh-samui.html .

Car and bike hire – hiring a vehicle or a bike is easy, but you should be warned that the roads can be rough, there may be a slow-moving construction traffic, and the driving of others can be inconsistent and not of a standard with which you are probably familiar. Plus there are some quirks to the Thai Highway Code which need mentioning. Usually, if you are driving on a road, you are the one with the right of way. But in Thailand this is not the case: you must give way to oncoming traffic that moves over into your lane, and also to traffic coming from behind which is moving faster than you. This is why you will see many people moving over as far to the left as possible to allow others to pass, often making use of the hard shoulder to let this happen. If you approach close to a slower moving vehicle, then it is polite to give a short hoot of your horn to allow them to know you are there, and wishing to pass.

You will also need to keep your eyes in front of you, to your left and your right side, and behind you at all times! Not only will you need to watch out for other vehicles, but for debris in the road, animals and children – and you will also need to keep a very respectful and courteous head on your shoulders.

If you intend to hire a moped, bicycle or motorbike, then you must wear a helmet. Not wearing one and being caught by the police will get you an immediate fine. Not only that, but wearing one might just save your life should you be unlucky and have an accident.

Still want to hire a car or a moped? If you book your villa through Samui Island Villas, they can organise car hire for you. You will need your passport, a credit card, an International Driving Licence or your own home country licence.

Do not be tempted to hire a car from a hire company that says you do not need to have a driving licence, as you will not be covered by insurance if you have an accident and if you are pulled over by the police you will be fined at the very least. If you are staying for longer than three months, then you will need to get a Thai driver’s licence otherwise, again, you will not be covered by insurance.

Given up on that idea? Why not hire a taxi, and let someone else be all-seeing and ever-careful, while you enjoy the views. You can hire a taxi from the roadside, or outside the bigger shops. Be ready to bargain if you wish to hire a car for a full day.

Ferry, bus, coach, mini-bus - here’s a good site that will give you their timetables – www.samuiwestcoast.de/samui/samui_transport.htm

Or why not consider using the songthaews, Samui’s public transport system which consists of converted pick-ups with bench seats. These circle the island on fixed routes all day. Fares are cheap and are paid at the end of your journey. If you want to catch one, you just wave it down as there are no set stopping places. And when you want to get off, ring the bell or bang on the roof! During the evenings these songthaews often turn into private taxis and you will have to negotiate your price before getting in.

The cabs with meters are yellow, and have a TAXI METER sign on the top. These are usually air conditioned. Prices might be high, as most drivers don’t seem to be all that interested in turning on their meters: but if you’re happy with that, try to get some idea of what the journey’s going to cost you before getting in.

You can also get a motorbike taxi, which are very cheap, but you may have some safety concerns about these. Make sure the driver has a helmet for you, and you may want to line it with a cloth of your own before actually putting it on.

Flying – you possibly flew in from Bangkok International Airport, so you will know that you can fly out again, should you wish to visit Bangkok itself for a few days, or go on to Chiang Mai … At the moment you can fly between Bangkok and Ko Samui on Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways.

Flying – you possibly flew in from Bangkok International Airport, so you will know that you can fly out again, should you wish to visit Bangkok itself for a few days, or go on to Chiang Mai … At the moment you can fly between Bangkok and Ko Samui on Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways. ler is he who goes on foot, and even then, he sits down a lot of the time.
