The Shack Bar and Grill in Bophut

The Shack Bar and Grill in Bophut 'Fisherman's Village'

The food in Thailand is renowned for its delicate fragrant spices and heat, but for those of us not used to these strong flavours, a welcome taste of home is sometimes a necessity. The Shack in Bohput’s Fisherman’s Village rises to the challenge spectacularly, with steaks to die for and all manner of grilled meats, burgers, seafood and side dishes.

The style of dishes available is wide, and there are lots of great things to choose from, but the star of the show here is the steak. There are a wide range of cuts to choose from – sirloin, rump, fillet and rib eye to name just a few – as well as the option to add a sauce, such as pepper or blue cheese, and a number of sides, from grilled prawns, chicken wings and king crab claws to garlic bread, French fries, baked potatoe and coleslaw. The grill is on show so you can watch your food being cooked, and part of the experience is that everything is cooked exactly to order, so you’ll know that if you ask for medium rare it will come medium rare. This is a place for meat lovers and fans of a good steak will adore it, but there are red meat alternatives too, such as the grilled tuna steak and chicken dishes. Try the asparagus wrapped in bacon to start, and after your juicy steak, pick from the tempting dessert menu. The cheesecake comes highly recommended, as does the mango pie, and the cocktail menu is especially good.

The layout of the Shack gives the restaurant a relaxed, spacious feel, even when busy. The owners of this restaurant have a real love of jazz, so you’ll have great background music and this really reflects the chilled out atmosphere. There are a great team of well-trained staff, who are very careful to make sure that you have everything you need, and provide a cheery upbeat atmosphere for you to enjoy your meal.

The food at this restaurant isn’t cheap by Koh Samui’s standards, but most visitors feel that the food is worth the price paid and its novelty value as a home away from home means that diners return again and again. In fact, this restaurant is one of the most popular in the area, and many people travel from the surrounding areas to eat here. As a result, it can be very busy  particularly weekends, so it ‘s always best to reserve a table
